Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-31288 MICKEY’S GRAND-SLAM FOR RESEARCH NEW YORK -- Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, congratulates Mickey Mantle upon establishment of the Mickey Mantle Foundation for Hodgkin’s Disease Research at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Looking on are Mayor Robert F. Wagner, left, and Whitey Ford, the Yankees’ star pitcher-coach. The great outfielder’s father died of Hodgkin’s disease 13 years ago, and for the past 10 years he has been making contributions to the Catholic hospital’s research program on that disease. Idea for the project began a decade ago at a meeting between the cardinal and the baseball star. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-7C-64-W)
