Looking on are Mayor Robert F. Wagner, left, and Whitey Ford, the Yankees’ star pitcher-coach. The great outfielder’s father died of Hodgkin’s disease 13 years ago, and for the past 10 years he has been making contributions to the Catholic hospital’s research program on that disease. Idea for the project began a decade ago at a meeting between the cardinal and the baseball star. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-7C-64-W)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)
