PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke of New York (seated, center) assumed
the presidency of the Methodist Council of Bishops as it met in connection
with the denomination’s quadrennial General Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The bishops made Methodist history by electing for the first time a Negro
bishop at the council’s president-designate. He is Bishop Prince A. Taylor,
Jr., of Monrovia, Liberia (seated, left). Right is Bishop Roy H. Short of
Nashville, Tenn., council secretary. Standing are three members at-large of
the council’s Executive Committee. Left to right: Bishop Eugene M. Frank of
St. Louis, Mo.; Bishop Richard C. Raines of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Bishop
Frederich Wunderlich of Frankfurt, Germany. The council’s out-going
president was Bishop Paul N. Garber of Richmond, Va. Credit Must Read:
