Text transcribed from caption: PC-46583 ULSTER CHURCH LEADERS MEET WITH PRIME MINISTER LONDON -- British Prime Minister Harold Wilson meets in London with the top church leaders of Ulster to discuss “the need to build upon the cessation of violence and the great desire of all communities for peace” in Northern Ireland. At the meeting are, from left: Stanley Orme, Minister of State for Northern Ireland; Cardinal William Conway, Roman Catholic Primate of All Ireland; Mr. Wilson; Mervyn Rees, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland; and Archbishop George Simms, Anglican Primate of Ireland. Also attending the conference were the Rt. Rev. Temple Lundi, moderation of the Presbyterian General Assembly, and the Rev. Harold Sloan, secretary of the Northern Ireland Methodist Church. The meeting coincided with the announcement in Dublin by Irish Republican Army Provisionals that they were extending for two weeks -- until Jan. 16 -- the Christmas truce which was initiated after talks with the churchmen. Dr. Coggan chose the debate on the reintroduction of capital punishment to make his speech. He ended by saying, “Let there be punishment of the most severe kind for those who murder defenseless women and children, or who hold to ransom those whose way of life or thought they happen to oppose. But leave the final judgement of death in the hands where final judgment rests and where forgiveness can alone be found.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PP-LON-12D-74-DS)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: PC-46040 DISCUSS SOUTH AMERICAN TRIP LONDON -- Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury and his wife Joan describe, with the aid of a map, their itinerary during a London press conference several days before leaving on a 17-day visit to South America. It is the Anglican Primate’s first visit to that continent and the last trip he will be making overseas before retiring on Nov. 15. Archbishop Ramsey said that his trip may include a meeting with the leaders of the Chilean junta which last year seized power from Marxist Present Allende. He defended his decision to go to Chile by saying that if he visits an overseas country it is not to be assume that his visit means he is giving approval or blessing to the political regime there. And, he said further, “whenever I meet with a government that is known to be oppressive, I always do draw attention to the distress that is caused by acts of injustice.” In addition to Chile, Archbishop Ramsey and his wife will visit Colombia, Argentina and Brazil. The trip will coincide with the celebration of the first 150 years of Anglicanism in South America. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PP-LON-9C-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: J-45869 PANOVS HOST A ‘THANK YOU’ PARTY LONDON -- Soviet ballet dancer Valery Panov gives his wife, Galina, a kiss as the couple, recently allowed to emigrate from the Soviet Union, enjoy their own party in London. The Panovs hosted the party to thank those in Britain who had campaigned to get them out of the USSR. Mr. Panov, a Jew who had been the leading male dancer with the Kirov Ballet, and Mrs. Panov, a ballerina, were fired from their ballet company after they formally requested permission to go to Israel. International public pressure is credited with much of the success of the Panovs’ efforts to emigrate. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-LON-8B-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: #S-4316 ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL LONDON -- St. Paul’s Cathedral, the “trade mark of London,” is considered the finest example of Renaissance architecture in England. Although damaged during the war, it stands as a symbol of England’s great trials. Most of the buildings in the immediate area were completely destroyed during the bombing of the City of London. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the first stone for St. Paul’s was laid in 1675. The choir was opened for use in 1697, and the last stone was set in 1710. It replaces an earlier church which was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JGM-MES-8D-6-W-A-E)
