Text transcribed from caption: C-46287 BUTZ COMMENT ABOUT POPE SCORED NEW YORK -- Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz has been scored by Roman Catholic and Italian-American leaders after he was quoted using a mock Italian accent in dismissing Pope Paul’s criticism of wealthy nations for telling poor nations to mee their hunger problems by controlling their populations. “He no playa the game, he no maka the rules,” Mr. Butz was reported in the New York Daily News as telling a breakfast meeting of newsmen in Washington. Later, he said his remark was “off the record.” Denouncing the remark as “a crude, pointed insult directed at Pope Paul VI,” the Archdiocese of New York sent a telegram to President Ford demanding that his Agriculture Secretary “apologize immediately or resign.” Rep. Mario Biaggi (D-N.Y.) also sent a telegram to President Ford asking that Mr. Butz be dismissed “for his anti-Catholic, anti-Italian remarks” and charging that the Secretary has “shown an offensive, bigoted mentality.” The New York archdiocesan Senate of Priests also called for his “immediate resignation or removal.” Mr. Butz’ remark, according to an Agriculture Department aide, was a retelling of a joke which he had heard at the World Food Conference in Rome, which Mr. Butz attended as head of the American delegation. The Agriculture Secretary has apologized for it. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-NY-11D-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: C-46209 ‘MODERN’ CHRIST FEATURED ON NEW MAGAZINE ROME -- The cover of a new Roman Catholic journal launched in Rome shows a long-haired, bearded young man, dressed in a light suit, white shirt and dark tie. A caption reads: “Look Jesus full in the face.” The magazine, called “Jesus” and devoted exclusively to the life and times of Christ, is published by the Society of St. Paul for the Apostolate of Communications (Pauline Fathers). It is a response to results of a recent public opinion survey in Italy of religious beliefs and attitudes. The survey showed that of a long list of famous people, Jesus was “most interesting” to older persons, while Karl Marx, Mao Tse-tung, Mohammed, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Ghandhi scored better with young people. The Pauline Fathers expressed hope that their publication would “penetrate and make real the time and the world of Jesus, in accord with a spirit of critical investigation.” A conservative Catholic organization has, however, filed suit against the magazine, claimed the image of the modern Christ on the cover offends Italy’s state religion. In contrast to the relatively simple exterior, the interior displays iridescent and striking mosaic decoration -- adapted from the Romans -- along the nave walls, on the “triumphal arch” leading into the apse, and on the apse itself. These mosaics are remnants saved from the fire which destroyed the old basilica and range in age from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-7B-74-DS)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: 4088-4089 STANDARDS AT MOTHER CABRINI CANONIZATION ROME -- One of the canvases which hung from the balconies in St. Peter’s Basilica at the canonization of Mother Cabrini is shown above, left. The painting depicts the miraculous cure of Paul Pezzini, an Italian workman who for 25 years was afflicted with a tumor and who was also stricken with acute double pneumonia and an intestinal inflammation. This was one of the two miracles accepted in 1944 by Pope Pius XII which led to the diminutive nun’s canonization within 30 years after her death in Chicago. At the right is shown a standard which looked out over St. Peter’s Square, outside the Basilica. The canvas portrays the new Saint accompanied by two of the heavenly host, while at the bottom of the panel a ship steams through the sea toward the New York skyline. Mother Cabrini crossed the Atlantic 26 times, became a naturalized American citizen in Seattle in 1909. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BE-RO-JOG-7B-6-C)

On the front of the banner (left) Mother Cabrini looks down from heaven with compassion on the ill, the needy, and the helpless. The reverse side of the banner (right) depicts the small, frail nun as she knelt before Pope Leo XIII who instructed her to labor in the United States rather than go to China, a land which had attracted her from childhood. In the background is the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, which Mother Cabrini first beheld in 1889 upon completion of her initial voyage from Italy. Age and wisdom -- in the person of 92-year-old Msgr. Giuseppe Pazzaglia -- comfort the boy, frightened by flash bulbs. The child, Francesco Ritrovato, marched in procession in Rome’s central Piazza di Spagna to the statue of the Virgin Mary in observance of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The holy day was highlighted by a visit from Pope Paul VI who placed a wreath of flowers before the statue. Msgr. Pazzaglia, one of the oldest active Catholic priests in Italy, is attached to the St. Andrea delle Fratte church. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-12C-64-NAB)

C-31896 POPE RETURNS HOME FROM INDIA ROME -- A smiling but tired Pope Paul VI acknowledges the warm welcome given to him by a cheering crowd on his arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport from his momentous visit to Bombay, India. Thousands of people holding lighted torches and the ringing of church bells accompanied the Pope during his evening ride to Vatican City. Behind him were a four-day visit to Bombay and an 8,000-mile flight. While in the Indian city -- for the 38th International Eucharist Congress -- the Pope met with many government officials and leaders of non-Catholic religions. At these meetings and in his talks, the Pope’s themes were religious unity, peace and aid to the world’s poor. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-12B-64-NAB)

The rites were held in connection with a memorial Mass for 130 Catholic missionaries killed in the Congo since that country’s independence in 1960. In a sermon the Pope condemned the “brutal violation” of basic human rights in recent violence in African nations. Christians have a duty, he said, to “stigmatize such crimes and bring them before the conscience of the world.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-3A-65-NAB)

The drama, which depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly Nazi anti-Jewish crimes, was banned by the Rome Prefecture under the Vatican-Italy concordat which protects the “sacred character” of the Eternal City. The explosion at the Vatican Gate of Santanna on the Via di Porta Angelica injured no one, but caused some damage to buildings and windows. Italian police said the explosion was in protest against the banning of “The Deputy,” controversial play which shows Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly Nazi atrocities against the Jews.
