Text transcribed from caption: C-46641 HITS PHILIPPINES ‘RESTRICTIVE’ PROBATION MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- A U.S. Roman Catholic missionary to the Philippines, who recently escaped deportation but was placed on “restrictive” probation in Manila for three years, has called his situation “unjust,” according to a report from Maryknoll headquarters. Father Edward Gerlock, M.M., a missionary in the Philippines for some 12 years, said, “I feel like a man who expects to die but only gets a broken leg. But I wouldn’t advocate getting broken legs as a good thing.” In October 1973, the priest was arrested in Mindanao and charged with being critical of the government’s martial law policies and giving support to the illegal Federation of Free Farmers. During the 16 months since his arrest, a period in which he was placed in the custody of his superior in Manila, church leaders throughout the Philippines rallied to his cause. Text transcribed from caption: C-46568 DOUBLES AS A DEALER LAS VEGAS -- Father Thomas Higgins, S.J., can usually be found on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he is an assistant chaplain and a professor. But during the Summer and school vacations, he can be found at the Royal Inn Casino in Las Vegas, where he is a blackjack dealer. The 42-year-old Jesuit priest feels he is carrying his message to the people. “You can’t preach Christ if your experience is entirely different from that of other people,” he says. “If priests were cab drivers or bus drivers or if they took different jobs, they would be much more to all kinds of people.” Father Higgins’ customers at the casino get his good counsel, although they seldom find out that the man behind the red satin tie is a priest. “Sometimes I tell people, ‘You’re drunk. Why don’t you go home? You’re going to drop your whole load,’” he said. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-LA-12D-74-DS)

Sinnott is arrested in Seoul by South Korean riot police during a demonstration to demand the release of political prisoners. A Roman Catholic Maryknoll priest from Brooklyn, N.Y., Father Sinnott is Vicar General of the Inchon diocese, west of Seoul. He was among several Korean and foreign Catholic priests escorting about 35 relatives of prisoners convicted this year under emergency decrees of President Park Chung Hee. The group was marching from Seoul’s Myondong Catholic Cathedral to a Protestant church building to attend a prayer meeting when riot police broke up the march, arresting Father Sinnott and three others. He was released after hours of questioning. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-SEO-11B-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: J-46210 FATHER DRINAN: ZIONISM EXPRESSES RELIGIOUS BELIEFS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Zionism is “more than a political movement; it is an expression of worldwide Jewish religious beliefs and hopes,” Rep. Robert F. Drinan (D-Mass.) said in remarks made before the national executive committee of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. “Zionism is a profoundly held spiritual conviction of Jewish fidelity to the biblical covenant which links a people, a faith and a land in a unique religious and mystical unity,” the Roman Catholic Jesuit priest-congressman stated in a speech which was inserted into the Congressional Record. It is “not for a Christian to state,” he added, “whether or not Zionism and Judaism are theologically separable. But politically they cannot be separated. Zionism is the mystique, the ‘elan vital’ of Israel. To equate Zionism with racism represents a frontal assault against the core values of Judaism.” In the light of recent public statements concerning the alleged influence of Jews in this country who are staunch supporters of Israel, it is time, Father Drinan said, “as never before,” for Americans, “especially Christian Americans,” to “reassess the fundamental reasons why the United States has a unique and profound alliance with Israel.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-8A-76-DS)

PAUL -- Father Paul LaFontaine, a priest at the Cathedral of St. Paul, examines damage to an altar in a basement chapel of the cathedral. Vandals started two fires in the cathedral and also ransacked the sacristy, main altar and basement chapel. The heaviest damage, however, was to the cathedral library in the basement where the intruders pushed over shelves and set fire to the scattered books. Although the vandals broke into locked compartments in the sacristy and chapel and removed the gold and silver chalices and Communion plates, none appeared to be missing, according to the cathedral’s rector. Father Gabrial Rea, C.M., of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, baptized the children. The girls, who were taken home to the Dominican Republic several days after the baptism, were given conditional baptism when they were born in August 1973, as they were not expected to survive. The ceremony in the chapel of Children’s Hospital was witnessed by the 23 members of the surgical team that separated the twins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-PHI-12A-74-DS)

Sinnott from Brooklyn, N.Y., is arrested by riot police at the U.S. Embassy compound in Seoul as he joined about 20 Korean women in a peaceful demonstration asking American aid in winning release of political prisoners. Father Sinnott, a resident of South Korea since 1950, is Vicar General of the Inchon diocese, west of Seoul. It was the second time in a week that he had been arrested while taking part in a demonstration. The women, mostly wives and mothers of dissidents jailed under emergency decrees of President Park Chung Hee last Summer, said they wanted to present a petition asking Mr. Ford to request the release of the prisoners when he met Mr. Park. Text transcribed from caption: C-46227 REGAINING THE PAST NEW YORK -- Simas Kudirka (center, dark jacket) inspects the book that records his mother’s baptism at St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Father Anthony Petrauskas, pastor of the church, shows the 1906 baptismal record book to, from second left, Mr. Kudirka’s son Evaldas, his daughter Lolita, Mr. Kudirka, an unidentified man, and Marija Sulskis, Mr. Kudirka’s mother. Mr. Kudirka, 45, is the Lithuanian seaman who was removed by force from a U.S. Coast Guard cutter in 1970 by officers of a Russian vessel from which he had defected off Martha’s Vineyard. Sentenced to 10 years in a Siberian prison camp for treason, his release was pushed up when the baptism records established the U.S. citizenship of his mother. That was sufficient to qualify him for citizenship in this country too. He was allowed to leave the Soviet Union with his family to begin a new life in the U.S. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-NY-11A-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: C-46224 PRIEST AND PIANIST FORM UNUSUAL TEAM NEW YORK -- Father Peter O’Brien, S.J., introduces the Mary Lou Williams Trio at a concert. The priest and the pianist are a team. “Her contribution to me is very simple to explain,” the assistant pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York says. “She’s my spiritual adviser.” For his part, the Jesuit priest has served as business manager for the jazz pianist and composer since 1970. An unusual occupation for a man who spends most of his time preaching, visiting the ill, or teaching religion to grade school students? “I am not the same as a Las Vegas act manager,” Father O’Brien explains. “Mary Lou is one of the few performers I would call a true artist, and she is completely devoted to jazz.” Describing the relevance of all this to a man of the cloth, he notes that “true jazz is a product of oppression and symbolizes man’s spiritual triumph over it, so it is a very religious experience.” This is particularly true of Miss Williams’ music, which includes such pieces as her own “Hymn in Honor of St. Martin de Porres” and “Mary Lou’s Mass.” He says his motivation for becoming her business manager “really stems from by belief that an artist is someone who has been blesses [sic] with a rare gift, and that gift should have its place in the world for everyone to see.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-NY-11A-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: C-46223 TENDING THE ‘PAPAL GARDENS’ APPLETON, Wis. -- Father Wilbert Staudenmaier, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, and parishioners tend one of his “Papal Gardens” in Appleton, Wis. The priest, parishioners and neighbors tend 259 vegetable garden plots -- 259 for the number of Popes since St. Peter. Similar projects are blossoming around the country and churchly tillers of the soil are already planning for next Spring’s planting. They are part of a growing movement in America, community gardening. As inflations kites the cost of food more and more Americans are looking for ways to stretch the food dollar -- and finding it in community gardening. Churches and religious groups are among the leaders in sponsoring garden projects and providing the land. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-NY-11A-74-DS)
