TEMPLE FREEWOOD ACRES, N.J. -- A nationwide drive to obtain $180,000 for the
reconstruction of the Golden Pavilion Temple, striking example of
Chinese-Tibetan architecture, has been launched at Freewood Acres, N.J. The
structure, originally built in China as a reproduction of the Chinese
Emperor’s temple, was erected for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 and
since then has been disassembled and in storage. Lowell Thomas, noted
explorer and commentator, is heading the campaign to reconstruct the temple
for the Kalmuk community of Lamaistic Buddhists at Farmingdale, N.J. About
1,000 Kalmuks who fled from Communists in Tibet have settled in New Jersey.
Descendants of the Mongol Emperor Kubla Khan, the Kalmuks’ spiritual leader
is the Dalai Lama. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO
