Text transcribed from caption: C-4234 EARTHQUAKE EXPERT NEW YORK -- Whenever New Yorkers think they’ve felt an earth tremor one of the first persons they call is Father Joseph Lynch, S.J., director of the Fordham University Observatory and one of the nation’s outstanding seismologists. Father Lynch assures all callers that he’s never known a quake to start in New York. Above, Father Lynch points to wavy lines on seismograph which indicate an actual quake in progress. He fixed location of these shocks as coming from a point in the South Atlantic. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (P.A.-NY-JOG-8B-6-C)

Walter J. Miller, S.J., of New York, the method by which the track of the comet was logged. Some years ago the Papal Observatory was located in Vatican City, but electrical interference hampered the workings of the delicate instruments and it was moved here. Photography of the stars is a major activity of the observatory, and there are more than 10,000 pictures on file. The Papal Observatory was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Text transcribed from caption: C-3932 LIFE IN A CAPUCHIN MONASTERY [7] STAUNTON, Va. -- The rapid pace of the Twentieth Century gives way to study, mediation, prayer and work at Our Lady of Angels Capuchin monastery here. However all is not done without recreation, as this picture shows. Longest period of relaxation is the hour after night prayers when the 24 students and six priest-teachers play cards, read and listen to the radio or play table tennis. Members of the order may leave the grounds of the monastery only on Thursday, except on monastery business or to visit the doctor or dentist. Off the grounds they dress in black suits. The Capuchins are one of three independent branches of the Franciscans initiated by the Blessed Matteo da Bascio in 1525, who set himself to restore a literal observance of the rule of St. Francis. Here, in the ceremony of grace held before each meal, the monks kiss the floor. The collar-like arrangements of their gowns are the famous Capuchin hoods. Text transcribed from caption: C-3927 LIFE IN A CAPUCHIN MONASTERY [2] STAUNTON, Va. -- The rapid pace of the Twentieth Century gives way to study, mediation, prayer and work at Our Lady of Angels Capuchin monastery here. At this monastery young Americans of Italian ancestry spend the last years of their intensive preparation for ordination as Capuchin priests. Here Brother Emanuel, the cook, inspects the spaghetti for a midday meal which includes steak, peas, cabbage, bread, milk and fruit. Although they eat well, the students’ fare is simple. Students range in age from 17 to 28. By Capuchin custom, they all wear beards. (One of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AC-RICH-VA-MES-6B-6-C-R)

Text transcribed from caption: C-3926 LIFE IN A CAPUCHIN MONASTERY [1] STAUNTON, Va. -- The rapid pace of the Twentieth Century gives way to study, mediation, prayer and work at Our Lady of Angels Capuchin monastery here. The basis of living is reduced to its essentials, as shown in this photo of the plainly-set table at meal time. Seating at long wooden tables is arranged by rank. Much modern equipment has been installed in the monastery and its grounds. Cells are equipped with hot and cold water, and tilling of the soil is done by power-driven plows. Students do most of work, and the building contains carpenter, cobbler, pressing and tailor shops. (One of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AC-RICH-VA-MES-6B-6-C-R)

Text transcribed from caption: C-3812 PRIEST-HORTICULTURIST PITTSBURGH -- On what once was 33 rolling acres of farmland, the Rev. Joseph V. Skripkus trims one of the 14,000 trees and shrubs he has planted on the grounds of St. Francis Convent and Academy at South Hills near here. The farmland has been converted into a virtual park, with trees flanking the walks and pines acting as windbreakers during the winter. Although much of the land has been planted as lawn, seven acres have been reserved by Father Skripkus for vegetable garden on which food is grown for the school cafeteria. His 500 fruit trees supply the 300 students with fresh fruit. In addition to his landscaping, Father Joe, as he is known to the thousands of girls who have graduated from the academy since 1926, has grafted and crossed plants, creating several new varieties of fruit trees and plants. He has an apple tree that produces six different kinds of apples, one pear tree that bears five varieties, and a plum tree with two.
