Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the
arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully,
uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of
New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the
statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a
barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request.
Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view
it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while
in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from
Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS
