ROME -- Enthusiastic pilgrims swarm around Pope Paul VI as he pays a short
visit to the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome’s oldest district
which borders Vatican City. The pontiff was en route to the papal summer
villa at Castel Gandolfo in the Alban Hills about 15 miles southeast of Rome.
He told the crowd that he had come to Trastevere “to honor the Madonna, to
whom the oldest church in Rome is dedicated” and “to meet the people.”
Unconfirmed reports said that while at the villa the Pope would work on his
first encyclical and that it will deal with family planning. Credit Must
