About this Collection

Conceived by journalist Louis Minsky (1909-1957), Religious News Service (RNS) was established in 1934 as an affiliated but independently managed agency of the National Conference of Jews and Christians (later the National Conference of Christians and Jews), and was dedicated to providing authoritative and bias-free news about religion and ethics to both the secular and religious press. This collection contains photographs documenting Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish groups. Coverage of Protestants (especially mainline Protestants) and Catholics constitutes the bulk of the images. View the collection guide to learn more. Digitization of some of the images in this collection made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Text transcribed from caption: C-45714 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (Fifth of a Series) ROME -- The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome and, despite the architectural splendor of St. Peter’s, it is first in rank of all Rome’s churches. The present church, dating from the 16th Century, is the fourth actual structure, the others having been destroyed by fire and earthquake. Among the architects who worked on it were Domenico Fontana, who also erected the obelisk in front of St. Peter’s, and Francesco Borromini. The facade, which is shown here, was executed in the 18th Century by Alessandro Galilei. Near the basilica is the Lateran Palace, rebuilt on the site of an earlier palace which had served as the papal residence until the 14th Century. It is now a museum of Christian antiquities. In contrast to the relatively simple exterior, the interior displays iridescent and striking mosaic decoration -- adapted from the Romans -- along the nave walls, on the “triumphal arch” leading into the apse, and on the apse itself. Text transcribed from caption: C-45710 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (First of a Series) ROME -- There are three other major basilicas in the Eternal City -- St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul’s-Outside-the-Walls -- but the first stop for most of those making the pilgrimage to Rome during the upcoming Holy Yar will be St. Peter’s Basilia in the Vatican. St. Peter’s can only be described in superlatives. It is the largest church in the Christian world, and has perhaps the most commanding dome of any building. It is able to accommodate 50,000 people and it’s architects included some of the greatest artists the world has ever produced. The present structure was begun in 1506 under Bramante to replace a basilica erected by the Emperor Constantine on the supposed site of St. Peter’s crucifixion. Bramante designed a church in the shape of a Greek cross but after his death in 1514 a succession of architects, including Rafael, Fra Giacondo and Fiuliano da San Gallo, made drastic changes. In 1546, Michelangelo was called in as chief architect and restored Bramante’s Greek-cross plan. He also designed an enormous dome over the crossing that would dominate the building. His conception may be best judged from the apse of the basilica (the view here), since the front of the building was later considerable changed. After Michelangelo’s death in 1564, the dome was carried out in slightly modified form by Giacomo della Porta. Under Pope Sixtus V, the nave of the building was lengthened to accommodate a vast congregation, in effect destroying the planned domination of the dome from the front of the church. The basilica itself was completed in 1614 although work continued in and around it for decades. The most impressive later additions are Bernini’s magnificent colonnades which extend forward from the sides of the basilica and end in semi-circles enclosing St. Peter’s Square. The great obelisk of Heliopolis, brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula, adorns the center of the Square. The dimensions of St. Peter’s are impressive, as they should be for the largest church in Christendom. The dome rises to a height of 450 feet from the ground and the basilica is 619 feet long. Text transcribed from caption: C-45700 CENTER OF ATTRACTION SAGINAW, Mich. -- Father Bartholomew Kestell and his puppet, “Father Oscar,” entertain a group of youngsters at St. Joseph School in Saginaw, Mich. The Capuchin priest was in the Midwest for a brief vacation following his second four-year mission stint on the Persian Gulf sheikdom of Bahrain Island. A man in perpetual motion who is sometimes called “The Brown Tornado” (for his brown robe) by fellow priests, Father Barth, a native of New Holstein, Wisc., is widely known in Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan for his wide range of talents. He is an architect, an archaeologist, a puppeteer, a historian and a former Navy chaplain. When Father Barth returns to the Mid-East, he will begin construction on the first Catholic church in Oman, another Persian Gulf sheikdom, in more than 300 years. Also witnessing the sacrament is Msgr. Tibor Meszaros, the cardinal’s secretary. As a young man, Mr. Rozsnyai played the organ for the former Hungarian primate’s installation as a cardinal. Text transcribed from caption: GRIST MILL CHURCH #S-5015 CLINTON, Tenn. -- Rural parishioners enter St. Mary’s Chapel, their tiny, unpainted one-room church hewed from rough pine boards and containing a home-made pulpit. Located in the village of Carroll Hollow, near here, it was until recently a roadside grist mill where the neighboring farmers brought their wheat and corn to be ground. But they thought it more important to have a church. So a small, white cross replaced a business sign over the doorway and the hut was immediately converted to the service of God. Parish (left), administrative director of the National Temperance Movement, distributes copies of the first issue of The National Temperance Digest, at the organization’s first biennial convention here. Officers of the movement examining the magazine are (left to right): the Rev. H.B. Cross of Nashville, Tenn., vice president; Miss Ethel Hubler of Los Angeles, member of the executive committee; the Rev. Wayne W.
