Description:
Text transcribed from caption: HONORABLY RETIRED #1787 NEW YORK -- Almost a tradition in itself is this old bell standing outside the rectory of St. George’s Protestant Episcopal church here. Made in England, it cost 250 pounds sterling and was presented to the church by Thomas H. Smith in 1818. For many years it hung in the old church in Beekman Street and afterward in the chapel at 14th Street. In 1905 it was removed to its present site after it was reported that it had been cracked by improper ringing. Once asked by the city Fire Department if the bell could be rung in case of fire, the vestry called attention to a by-law of the church directing the sexton “to have the bell rung at all alarms of fire.” Shown inspecting the bell is the rector of St. George’s, the Rev. Elmore M. McKee. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-3C-6-O-A-E)

Text transcribed from caption: P-29734 CLERGY’S PROTEST AGAINST DIEM REGIME NEW YORK -- Fifteen thousand U.S. clergymen, citing what they described as religious persecution of Buddhists in South Vietnam, have protested continuance of U.S. aid to the government headed by President Ngo Dinh Diem. Here, some of the letters from clergymen are displayed by Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick, minister emeritus of Riverside church in New York City, and Dr. Donald S. Harrington, minister of the Community church of New York and secretary of the Ministers Vietnam Committee. A letter, registering the clergymen’s protest, was sent to President Kennedy. “We decry,” it said, “the loss of American lives and billions of dollars to a regime universally regarded as unjust, undemocratic and unstable…the religious persecution of Buddhists by the ruling Roman Catholic Ngo family has shocked the world.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RNS-NY-8C-63-W)

Text transcribed from caption: CHAPLAIN TO THE WOUNDED #1683 NEW YORK -- The end of the war and demobilization have altered some aspects of the Army chaplain work, but for some the job is still vital. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. These four chaplains at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, are typical of the clergymen working in large army and veterans hospitals. They are left to right: Lt. Col. John M. Bellamy, Catholic, Massena, N.Y.; Capt. Aaron Blumenthal, Jewish, Houston, Texas; Lt. John D. Laida, Protestant, Syracuse, N.Y.; and Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Protestant, Chicago.
