Text transcribed from caption: PC-46657 ASIAN CHRISTIAN PEACE CONFERENCE KOTTAYAM, India -- Delegate to the first assembly of the Asian Christian Peace Conference march through Kottayam, India, site of the assembly. Below, school children, led by Roman Catholic nuns, participate in the rally held during the assembly. The assembly called for an “absolute ban” on all manufacturing, testing and stockpiling of nuclear weapons. Assembly delegates also accused the U.S. of being the chief promoter of the nuclear arms race, and called for American withdrawal of all nuclear weapons in Asia. The Asian Christian Peace Conference is a new regional affiliate of the Prague-based CPC, once a major channel of East-West church relations but more recently found chiefly in Communist countries of Eastern Europe. Most Western CPC national groups disbanded or changed their name as a result of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The CPC now seeks to enlist members among developing nations of Africa and Asia. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (TEM-IND-1D-75-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: P-46624 SOVIET CHURCHMEN VISIT INDIA MADRAS, India -- Two prominent Soviet churchmen, Archbishop Yan Matulis (left) of the Lutheran Church of Latavia and Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Philaret Denisenko of Kiev and Galicia, recently visited India at the invitation of the National Christian Council of India. During their visit they went to New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madras. In Madras, they were given a public reception by the Church of South India and other churches and Christian associations. The two churchmen maintained that there is absolute freedom of worship for the 60 million Christians in the Soviet Union and that the government is not interested in how religion is practiced in families. The churches, they said, do not interfere in the political life of the state and confine themselves to religious activities. Churches in the Soviet Union are financially independent of the state and are self-supporting, which each denomination having its own theological schools or seminaries. Any preaching that is done, however, is done only within the churches. “We do not and cannot preach in the streets or any public place,” one of the churchmen explained. Text transcribed from caption: C-45694 VISIT TO INDIA SALEM, India -- Philadelphia’s Cardinal John Krol traveled more than 9,000 miles to officiate at the ordination rites of Bishop Michael B. Duraisamy, the recently named spiritual leader of the Diocese of Salem in the South India State of Tamil Nadu. The Indian prelate came to know the American cardinal when he was a priest-student at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s when Cardinal Krol was an auxiliary bishop of the Cleveland diocese. In the left photo, Cardinal Krol participates in the Arati ceremony, which is Hindu in its origins but is used universally by all faiths in India. In the ceremony, an ointment of spices and sandalwood is placed on the forehead of one who comes in the name of God, with the residue then being sprinkled in the path of the visitor. Bishop Duraisamy is at right as two girls bring the ointment to the cardinal. At right, Cardinal Krol, who has removed his shoes, visits a Hindu temple in Salem. He said that there seems to be a friendly coexistence between the Hindu majority and the Christian minority in the area and that the priest’s clerical garb brings signs of instant respect from all segments of the population. Bishop Duraisamy, 43, is a native of the Salem area. His diocese, located in south central India near the border of the State of Kerala, which tradition says was evangelized by St. Thomas the Apostle, has 66,000 Catholics in a general population of 4.5 million.
