Historic Church of the Redeemer, largest Lutheran house of worship in
Palestine, is viewed through a street arch in the old, walled-in-section of
the city. The stone edifice is built on the site of the hospital of the
Knights of St. John, a religious order which began at the time of the
Crusades. Its congregation comprises the small colony of Germans who reside
in the Holy Land. Other Lutheran churches are used by Arab converts. In the
background, right, can be seen the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
