ASSEMBLY HEARS ARAFAT, TEKOAH UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. -- At top, Yasir Arafat, the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), acknowledges applause as he takes the podium to address the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Arafat, whose appearance spurred numerous protests, told the Assembly that his organization’s goal remained a Palestinian state that would include Moslems, Christians and Jews. Below, with Israeli chief delegate Yosef Tekoah at the podium preparing to deliver a rebuttal to Mr. Arafat, representatives of the PLO (left front) and members of Arab delegations walk out of the Assembly chamber. Mr. Tekoah said that a state such as proposed by Mr. Arafat would mean the destruction of Israel and the substitution of an Arab state. He branded the Palestinian guerrillas as terroristic and murderous and vowed his government’s determination to fight them implacably. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-NY-11B-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: PCJ-46241 ISSUES THREAT AGAINST ARAFAT NEW YORK -- With a pistol prominently displayed on his desk, Russell Kelner, who claims he is the chief of operations of the Jewish Defense League, tells newsmen that “We have trained men who will make sure that Arafat (Yasir Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization) and his lieutenants do not leave New York alive” during a press conference at the JDL’s New York headquarters. On the wall behind Mr. Kelner is a picture of Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the militant Jewish organization. The day after making his threat against Mr. Arafat, who came to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Kelner was arrested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and charged with violating a Federal law that prohibits someone from using interstate commerce to threaten to injure and kidnap another person. Mr. Arafat arrived at the United Nations under tight security precautions and addressed the General Assembly without incident. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-NY-11B-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: PC-46281 CIVIL DEFENSE FOOD COULD FEED MILLIONS NEW YORK -- Carmin G. Novis (left), director of the Mayor’s Emergency Control Board, and Cynthia Walsh of his staff, turn over civil defense supplies to Louis Samia, executive director of CARE, at a New York City fallout shelter. New York has had a policy for several years under which food supplies are transferred to CARE whenever a building with a fallout shelter is demolished. CARE then sends the food to countries such as Niger, Chad and Bangladesh. In New York City alone, there are enough food supplies to feed an estimated 12 million persons for two weeks. Some churches may not be aware that they have such food supplies literally at their feet. In the early 1960s, church buildings throughout the country had their basements converted into fallout shelters, with supplies of food and clothing that could be used in the event of a nuclear attack. In most cases, these food supplies are still in the church basements and are still edible. But, in many places local regulations will not permit the churches to release the foodstuffs. Text transcribed from caption: PC-46497 HITS ABORTION’S GENOCIDAL ASPECTS NEW YORK -- Comedian-turned-social-activist Dick Gregory tells a gathering of youthful right-to-life leaders in New York that he opposes abortion because of its coercive and genocidal aspects. Speaking during the third annual “Thanksgiving for Life” Convention sponsored by the National Youth Pro-Life Coalition, a non-sectarian, non-partisan group working for “positive alternatives” to abortion, war, capital punishment, euthanasia, compulsory sterilization and “other forms of violence,” Mr. Gregory said he fully supports the right to life of every human being “from conception to natural death.” He added that he “unequivocally” endorses a “total human life amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would promote the value and dignity of every human life.” The 42-year-old father of 10 is currently involved in bringing attention to the world food shortage, particularly in Africa. He termed efforts toward population control the work of the wealthy elite seeking to exploit natural resources by limiting births. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-12A-74-DS)

The Palestinians had arrived in New York to take part in the United Nations General Assembly debate on Palestine. Some 300 demonstrators were at the hotel when 16 PLO representatives arrived with a police escort. Police managed to keep the demonstrators away from the PLO party but a small group slipped past the police into the lobby. Before being persuaded by police and hotel security men to leave, the demonstrators went up to a clerk and demanded a room. When the clerk told them the hotel was full, one demonstrator replied, “What, no rooms for New York Jews and rabbis yet you have rooms for Arab killers?” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-NY-11B-74-DS)
