Description:
Text transcribed from caption: #4950 A SACRED ORTHODOX DUTY NEW YORK -- The practice of wearing the phylacteries, consisting of two small square cases of leather, one of which is worn on the forehead, and the other on the upper left arm, is regarded as a sacred religious duty to Orthodox Jews. Begun at the age of 13, the practice is observed every morning except on the Sabbath and other holy days. The phylacteries are also termed “tephillin,” plural of the world “tephillah” meaning “a prayer.” They contain narrow strips of parchment on which are copied passages from the Bible. David Munroe Cory, pastor of Cuyler Presbyterian church, points to the first of the Ten Commandments as it is translated into Iroquois. Dr. Cory learned the difficult language after a large group of Mohawk Indians settled in Brooklyn and became his parishioners. Many Iroquois words contain 18 letters, some have 30. Blackboard technique is used by the pastor to teach Indian youngsters the tenets of their faith. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-JOG-7C-6-W)
