Text transcribed from caption: P-30929 BIBLE TRANSLATION DESCRIBED IN FAIR PAVILION NEW YORK -- One of the smallest, but most unusual, buildings at the New York World’s Fair is the “Pavilion of 2,000 Tribes.” Built by the Wycliffe Bible Translators to represent a native hut, the pavilion’s name represents the number of tribes as yet without a written language. In addition to an exhibit area describing translation technique and the work of the Wycliffe organization, fairgoers -- for 50-cent admission fee -- can view large murals in a display room which tell the story of Christian linguistic work among headhunters in the Peruvian jungles. Text transcribed from caption: P-30914 MORMON TEMPLE FACADE BECKONS FAIR VISITORS NEW YORK -- Towering pillars, columns and spires are located throughout the 646-acres of the New York World’s Fair, and among the most impressive is the front facade of the Mormon Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah. A large reflecting pool is in front of the tall structure, which is topped by a gold statue of the Angel Moroni. Dioramas, statuary and a twin theater are main features of the pavilion. A 15-minute film, “Man’s Search for Happiness,” is offered on a staggered schedule in both theaters. Except for minor finishing touches, the pavilion was ready for the Fair’s opening on April 22 and drew large crowds. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RNS-NY-4D-64-NBM)

Marked by a glistening sunburst tower and surrounded by fountains and outdoor hanging gardens, the pavilion features a theater which shows an evangelistic film narrated by Mr. Graham. Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C. Wedel of New York, assistant general secretary for program, National Council of Churches; Greek Orthodox Archdeacon Polycarp; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and a WCC president; Charles C. Parlin of New York, Methodist layman and a WCC president, and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Horace W.B. Donegan of New York. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BS-NY-4C-64-NBM)

The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership.
