Kasai, Republic of the Congo - 10 August 1960. Some 11,500 soldiers from nine countries are now on duty with the U.N. Force in the Republic of the Congo, helping to restore order ad calm in the country. Assistance also includes technical and medical personnel, air transport, food, heavy materials and various supplies. Description:
Congo, February 1961 - One outstanding and reassuring feature of the confused situation in the Congo has been the prompt and generous response of governments in all parts of the world to the appeal of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for food supplies and materials for the relief of the famine in South Kasai. Large quantities of maise, rice, dried milk, dried fish and palm oil are the main food stuffs so far contributed by more than 20 countries. FAO has also purchased supplies of fertilisers and seeds together with hoes and bush knives to enable the refugees to prepare the ground and now crops immediately. The transport of these food stuffs and equipment and their distribution is arranged between FAO and the United Nations. Sacks of maize seed provided by FAO are unloaded at Dilinga, South Kasai.
