Description:
"A most historic picture. The first church building, built entirely by Koreans, in Korea. Dedicated by Dr. Underwood in 1895. A Christian congregation had been worshipping in Sorai village before the first Presbyterian missionaries set foot in Korea (Dr. Horace Allen) in 1884. This congregation was composed of smugglers who had heard the gospel from missionaries in Chefoo, China & Manchuria. RH Baird, Apr. '73."

Description:
Korea (Chosen) Pyengyang - First missionary residence. This house, with about 30 acres of land, was the country estate, located just outside the walls of Pyengyang City, of a well-to-do Korean family. Using Han Suk Chin as intermediary Dr. Moffett bought this house and land for mission use in March 1893. Hearing of this the governor of Pyongon Province arrested Mr. Han and the Korean seller of the land and beat them until Dr. Moffett accepted the money back and the deal was cancelled. Two years later, in the spring of 1895, it was finally possible to purchase the same property and it became compound. About 1896 Graham Lee built another house which became the permanent Moffett home. This house was used 1900-1901 for the P.Y. Foreign School. The Bernheisels and others lived in this house for longer or shorter terms. The gentleman on the left in the picture is almost certainly Yang Chan Baek [Chinese symbols] who was, 1895-1900, evangelist for the whole Yalu River region, later pastor in Syen Chan. Richard H. Baird, May, '73.

"In Korean called Soong Sil College. Now known as Soong Jun College. The 1st college graduates of any kind of college, government or church, public or private, in Korea. Severance Medical College graduated 6 men about a month later the same year. The man on the right is P'yun in Suh, who was later ordained and gave most of his life as assistant pastor of the great Central Church in Pyongyang, the Rev. Kil Sun Choo, the former 'blind pastor of Pyongyang' being principal pastor during this time. The name of the man on the left I have forgotten. His record after graduation is unknown to me. Description:
(Korea) Chosen. Students who were acquitted after year's imprisonment during Korean Conspiracy Trial. Taken October 12, 1912. "Found innocent after a years imprisonment. The above date, Oct. 1912, is questionable. The conspiracy case was not settled till the spring or summer of 1914 although it is possible the men in this picture were found innocent and released by the lower court in Oct. 1912. Those found guilty at this time carried their case to a higher court in Seoul. With my mother, some of whose students at Soongsil College were on trial, I attended a session of this court in Feb. 1914. Most of these were released by the higher court later that spring or early summer." - Rev. Baird, April '73.
