Text transcribed from caption: STEPINAC PROTEST MEETING #C-4886 PHILADELPHIA -- Convention Hall is jammed with 25,000 Catholics from all parishes of this city and its environs for a gigantic protest meeting that asked President Truman and the State Department to insist on the release of Archbishop Louis Stepinac, convicted Yugoslav prelate. The rally, sponsored by the local chapter of the Catholic War Veterans, was attended by Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia. The huge throng was the largest ever assembled in the municipal auditorium. Thousands were unable to get in and listened to the proceedings broadcast by loud speakers outside. Text transcribed from caption: HUNGARIAN BISHOP BEHIND BARS #c-2076 BUDAPEST -- Imprisoned here as a “war criminal” Bishop Stefan Uzdoczy-Zadravetz (shown behind prison bars) has long been noted for his strong anti-Communistic attitude. He was “Army Bishop” of Admiral Nicholas Horthy’s forces after the last war. Although the bishop has been in retirement since 1928, most of the material for the accusations against him was gathered from his speeches and activities during World War I and in the “counter-revolutionary” period following it when Horthy’s regime superceded [sic] that of the Bolshevik Bela Kun. The 62-year-old prelate lives in a room with 30 other prisoners. Three times weekly he celebrates Mass in the prison chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EZ-BUDA-MES-3C-6-C)

The cardinal, the highest-ranking prelate from a Communist country to attend the Council, headed a group of 25 Polish bishops. Some 35 other Polish prelates remained at home, not having received exit permits to attend the Council sessions. Cardinal Wyszinski, an outspoken critic of the Communist regime in Poland, recently delivered several sermons denouncing restrictions placed on the Church in his homeland. Text transcribed from caption: C-29910 U.S. CATHOLIC REPORTER VISITS CUBA HAVANA, Cuba -- The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Havana, Cuba. A Catholic reporter who took this picture said the Church “was just tolerated” by the Communist regime. He found crowded churches in the city and said “if Havana represents conditions throughout the country the Catholic Church is not hindered in any way.” Arthur Jones, a reporter for the Catholic Star Herald of the Camden (N.J.) diocese, spent 9 days in Cuba on assignment of his paper. Pro-government priests, he said, claimed the Church had “withdrawn” almost immediately after the Castro regime took over. Mr. Jones said another priest reported negotiations could be reopened to allow more clergy on the island and that some priests were arriving from Belgium. Text transcribed from caption: C-29835 POLAND’S MOST FAMOUS SHRINE CZESTOCHOWA, Poland -- This is the ancient monastery-church of the Pauline Fathers on Jasna Gora (Bright Mountain), which houses the famous shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, patroness of Poland. Scene of annual national pilgrimages which have brought together more than one million faithful at one time, the shrine contains a picture of the Mother of Christ which legend says was painted on cypress wood by St. Luke. Because the wood is now dark with age, the image is often called the “Black Madonna.” This photograph at Czestochowa was taken during a recent visit by Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, Primate of Poland who charged the Communist authorities with persistent efforts to deny or restrict the religious freedom of Polish Catholics. The prelate challenged the Reds to match their praise of Pope John XXIII’s encyclical, Pacem in Terris, with proper respect for basic human rights. Text transcribed from caption: C-31769 HUNGARIAN BISHOPS CONSECRATED BUDAPEST -- An unprecedented ceremony in the Catholic Church of Hungary. Five bishops are consecrated at once in St. Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest, by Archbishop Endre Hamvas of Kalocsa. Appointment of the bishops and their designation as administrators of long-vacant bishoprics followed the “limited” agreement between the Vatican and Hungary’s Communist regime. The bishops can be identified here by the kerchiefs they wear. Left to right, they are Auxiliary Bishop Pal Brezanoczy of Eger, standing and partly obscured by priest; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Cserhati of Pecs; Bishop Jozsef Iljias of Csanad; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Winkler of Szombathely; and Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Banic of Gyor. Bishop Winkler had already been raised to the episcopacy by Pope John XXIII but conditions in Hungary had prevented his consecration. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-10E-64-W)

They are Ukrainian Rite Josyf Cardinal Slipyi, Archbishop of Lwow (left), and Josef Cardinal Beran, Archbishop of Prague. The Eastern Rite cardinal was released in 1963 after 18 years of Soviet confinement, and the Czech archbishop recently arrived in Rome after being freed from more than 15 years of imprisonment and house detention. Text transcribed from caption: C-32175 POPE WELCOMES ARCHBISHOP BERAN VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI had a warm welcome for Josef Cardinal Beran as he received the Archbishop of Prague in a 30-minute private audience. The meeting took place two days before the liberated archbishop and 26 other prelates were made cardinals at a secret consistory. During the audience the Pope gave Archbishop Beran a gold pectoral cross and the Czech prelate presented the pontiff with a Bohemian crystal vase engraved with figures of saints. Cardinal Beran was banished from his See in 1949, and though never brought to trial spent 14 years in prison. He was released in 1963, but remained in detention without being allowed to perform his ecclesiastical functions. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2D-65-NAB)

Text transcribed from caption: C-32163 A CARDINAL’S SMILE TABOR, Czechoslovakia -- The high window spelled confinement but the pleasant smile may have indicated knowledge that his trial in a Communist land would soon end. Josef Cardinal Beran is shown as he looked out from the windows of Radvanov Monastery, near Tabor, Czechoslovakia, flour days before announcement he would be permitted to go to Rome to accept his Red Hat as a Prince of the Church. The Archbishop of Prague, never permitted to return to his See upon release from Communist custody, had been isolated from his flock by the Czech regime. Cardinal Beran will live in Rome.
