Text transcribed from caption: SOLACE FOR THE WEARY #3393 LOS ANGELES -- Grace Cathedral’s Wayside Shrine of St. Francis -- a tiny chapel seating only 12 persons -- is open here 24 hours a day for those seeking rest and spiritual meditation. A year ago it was a shabby little shack, but Canon Charles Shreve dreamed of making it a place of refuge for men and women of all religions and creeds. The Shrine cost $3,000, all of it contributed within a space of two weeks. John de Rosen, famous muralist, after spending an hour in the Shrine, offered to paint the meeting of St. Francis and the beggar over the altar free of charge. Text transcribed from caption: PC-29923 IN MEMORIAM: RED VESTMENTS FOR MARTYRS SAN FRANCISCO -- Typical of hundreds of churches across the United States was this scene in San Francisco. On Sunday, Sept. 22, the nation’s churchgoers joined in memorial services for four Negro girls who died when a bomb blasted a Negro Baptist church in Birmingham. Here, at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic church, the more than 2,500 attending services overflowed the building. They fell to their knees on the sidewalk during a Mass offered for the dead children. The priest wore vestments in the “red of martyrdom” instead of the black of mourning. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-9D-63-W)

Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group.
