Bromley Oxnam of New York, president of the Federal Council of Churches, delivers the keynote address at a Protestant Festival of Faith held here to commemorate Reformation Week. The bishop warned an audience of 12,000 assembled in Public Hall that force might postpone war but it would not create a permanent peace. “Atomic bombs and other weapons can, if we are successful, defeat the masses who fight for Russia,” he said. “But they cannot eradicate materialistic philosophy. That can be beaten only by a dynamic faith of Christ.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (G-CPD-CLEV-BS-10E-6-W)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- St. Joseph’s Academy, Catholic high school for girls in Cleveland, called a cab here for their students -- some 600 of them. The girls wanted to attend a special performance of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” at the nearby Lakewood Civic Auditorium. School officials found that chartered buses were too expensive for a relatively short haul, so they made a deal with a local cab company -- 25 cents a head. Nearly 40 cabs were put into a shuttle operation between the school and auditorium. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RF-CLE-9B-63-RB)

Text transcribed from caption: C-29718 MEDIEVAL TREASURE AT CLEVELAND MUSEUM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scenes from the life of Christ are depicted in these miniature paintings taken from pages of the Gotha Missal -- a medieval Mass book recently acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Containing the main body of the missal and the Church calendar, the 164-page work is French and dates from 1375. Thought to be made for Charles V of France, it is known as the Gotha Missal because it was once owned by the Duke of Gotha in Germany. The manuscript has been attributed to Jean Bondol, French court painter and valet de chambre of Charles V at that time. At tope is the book opened up to illustrations entitled “The Crucifixion,” at left, and “Christ in Majesty.” Miniature scenes at the bottom are (from left): “The Annunciation,” in which Mary learns from the Angel Gabriel that she is to be the mother of Christ; “The Resurrection;” and “The Trinity,” a representation of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Text transcribed from caption: PC-30547 RIOT ERUPTS OVER CLEVELAND SCHOOL INTEGRATION CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Several clergymen joined picket lines in Cleveland, Ohio, to demonstrate in support of full school integration. Here a bystander, about to be restrained, grabs the arm of a picket in front of an East Side grade school. While a few people were knocked on the ground, order was restored quickly at this location. At the Murray Hill school, however, an unruly crowd of about 400 -- mostly young men -- stopped scheduled picketing with a barrage of eggs, fruit and bottles. Police had to use their clubs to stop the attack. Integration leaders called off the demonstration in order to avert further violence. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1E-64-NBM)
