Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-31769 HUNGARIAN BISHOPS CONSECRATED BUDAPEST
-- An unprecedented ceremony in the Catholic Church of Hungary. Five bishops
are consecrated at once in St. Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest, by Archbishop
Endre Hamvas of Kalocsa. Appointment of the bishops and their designation as
administrators of long-vacant bishoprics followed the “limited” agreement
between the Vatican and Hungary’s Communist regime. The bishops can be
identified here by the kerchiefs they wear. Left to right, they are Auxiliary
Bishop Pal Brezanoczy of Eger, standing and partly obscured by priest;
Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Cserhati of Pecs; Bishop Jozsef Iljias of Csanad;
Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Winkler of Szombathely; and Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef
Banic of Gyor. Bishop Winkler had already been raised to the episcopacy by
Pope John XXIII but conditions in Hungary had prevented his consecration.
