Text transcribed from caption: C-46003 ANNUAL MASS AT ‘SMALLEST’ CHURCH BAYOU GOULA, La. -- Worshippers gather outside the Chapel of the Madonna, which is probably the smallest church in the world, for Mass on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the only time during the year in which the church is used. The tiny nine-by-nine foot structure, located in Bayou Goula, a community 24 miles from Louisiana’s state capital at Baton Rouge, is so small that in addition to its altar, only a priest and an altar boy can fit inside. The approximately 200 worshippers who annually attend the Mass on the Feast of the Assumption must assemble on the front lawn of the tiny chapel and the altar must be moved outside. The chapel, which has been featured in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not,” was built in 1903 by Anthony Gullo, a poor immigrant Italian sugarcane famer. When Gullo’s son was gravely ill he promised to erect, as far as he was able, a chapel to the Madonna if she interceded for the youth. The boy did recover and Gullo kept his promise with the help of friends who assisted in building the tiny building amid sugarcane fields near the Mississippi River. By 1932, the original building had deteriorated and was replaced by the present one of the same size. Today it remains a simple, well-kept frame building with only a small cross and an arched doorway to distinguish it as a church. However, the more elaborate interior has paintings of saints and an alcove holding a glass-enclosed replica of Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna.” Years ago people seeking favors gave valuable jewelry when their prayers were answered, but this custom has long since ended. However, today about 70 jeweled pieces still adorn the blue sash annually placed on the chapel’s statue of the Madonna for the feast day Mass. Father Thomas Smith, 65, a Dominican, died of a heart attack induced by heavy smoke inhalation. Text transcribed from caption: C-45714 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (Fifth of a Series) ROME -- The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome and, despite the architectural splendor of St. Peter’s, it is first in rank of all Rome’s churches. The present church, dating from the 16th Century, is the fourth actual structure, the others having been destroyed by fire and earthquake. Among the architects who worked on it were Domenico Fontana, who also erected the obelisk in front of St. Peter’s, and Francesco Borromini. The facade, which is shown here, was executed in the 18th Century by Alessandro Galilei. Near the basilica is the Lateran Palace, rebuilt on the site of an earlier palace which had served as the papal residence until the 14th Century. It is now a museum of Christian antiquities. The older palace was the scene of the five Lateran Councils, and the new one of the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-7C-74-DS)

In contrast to the relatively simple exterior, the interior displays iridescent and striking mosaic decoration -- adapted from the Romans -- along the nave walls, on the “triumphal arch” leading into the apse, and on the apse itself. These mosaics are remnants saved from the fire which destroyed the old basilica and range in age from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-7B-74-DS)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-45710 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (First of a Series) ROME -- There are three other major basilicas in the Eternal City -- St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul’s-Outside-the-Walls -- but the first stop for most of those making the pilgrimage to Rome during the upcoming Holy Yar will be St. Peter’s Basilia in the Vatican. St. Peter’s can only be described in superlatives. It is the largest church in the Christian world, and has perhaps the most commanding dome of any building. It is able to accommodate 50,000 people and it’s architects included some of the greatest artists the world has ever produced. The present structure was begun in 1506 under Bramante to replace a basilica erected by the Emperor Constantine on the supposed site of St. Peter’s crucifixion. Bramante designed a church in the shape of a Greek cross but after his death in 1514 a succession of architects, including Rafael, Fra Giacondo and Fiuliano da San Gallo, made drastic changes. In 1546, Michelangelo was called in as chief architect and restored Bramante’s Greek-cross plan. He also designed an enormous dome over the crossing that would dominate the building. His conception may be best judged from the apse of the basilica (the view here), since the front of the building was later considerable changed. After Michelangelo’s death in 1564, the dome was carried out in slightly modified form by Giacomo della Porta. Under Pope Sixtus V, the nave of the building was lengthened to accommodate a vast congregation, in effect destroying the planned domination of the dome from the front of the church. The basilica itself was completed in 1614 although work continued in and around it for decades. The most impressive later additions are Bernini’s magnificent colonnades which extend forward from the sides of the basilica and end in semi-circles enclosing St. Peter’s Square. The great obelisk of Heliopolis, brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula, adorns the center of the Square. The dimensions of St. Peter’s are impressive, as they should be for the largest church in Christendom. The dome rises to a height of 450 feet from the ground and the basilica is 619 feet long. Since 1905 the monastery fathers have devoted most of their time to the education of young boys but their work was interrupted when the Hitler SS confiscated the building and grounds at the outbreak of the war. Text transcribed from caption: C-4167 CRUSADE FOR PEACE [1] PARIS -- Four hundred and twenty pilgrims from 14 countries gather outside the ancient abbey of Vezelay in central France at the close of a Crusade for Peace hailed as one of the most remarkable religious demonstrations witnessed since the end of the war. The crosses lined up outside the church were carried by pilgrims in an 18-day march on foot through towns and villages where thousands joined them in prayer, many even accompanying the crusaders all the way on their long trek over sun-baked roads. American and Canadian crusaders did not reach France in time for the Crusade, but their crosses were borne by French volunteers. Vezelay is the place where St. Bernard preached the Second Crusade 800 years ago. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PA-NY-TFD-7D-6-C)
