Description:
Text transcribed from caption: BISHOP SHERRILL TAKING OATH #5012 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With his right hand upon an open book of Common Prayer that is borne by the Very Rev. John Wallace Suter, dean of Washington Cathedral, the Rt. Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill reads the oath during his installation as the 20th Presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The impressive ecclesiastical ritual was conducted before an assemblage of clergy and laity that filled the magnificent edifice. To the left of Bishop Sherrill is the retiring Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Henry St. George Tucker. At extreme left of picture is former Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts, president of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s House of Deputies. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (VF-WASH-BS-1C-47-A-E)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity.
