Description:
Text transcribed from caption: PC-46112 DISAGREEMENT OVER ORDINATIONS A Jesuit theologian said that an article he wrote in 1966 was recently “misinterpreted" by an Episcopal bishop who cited it as support for invalidating the ordinations of 11 women deacons. Father Frans Josef van Beeck, S.J. (left), associate professor of systematic theology at Boson College, said that Episcopal Bishop Arthur A. Vogel of West Missouri (right) had not drawn the proper conclusions from his 1966 article. In his report to the Episcopal House of Bishops in August, which voted to declare the women’s ordinations invalid, Bishop Vogel said that, based on Father van Beeck’s article, “validity (of ordination) means ecclesiastical recognition." The Jesuit said that it was “obvious" that Bishop Vogel attributed “much more substance" to his definition of validity than he himself had intended for it to have, and that the “warranted" conclusion from the article would be that the women’s ordinations “was irregular, but not invalid in the traditional sense." Bishop Vogel has not replied that it remains his belief that he did not misinterpret Father van Beeck. “More importantly," he continued, “neither my advisement nor the action of the House of Bishops depended in any positive way on the theological position of Father van Beeck." Text transcribed from caption: PC-45912 KOREAN PRESIDENT’S WIFE SLAIN SEOUL -- The wife of South Korean President Park Chung Hee was fatally wounded here by a gunman who attempted to assassinate her husband. Mrs. Park, 49, died in a Seoul hospital on Aug. 15 several hours after she was shot in the head during a national observance of Korean independence from Japan. The murder of Mrs. Park was viewed here not only a personal tragedy for South Korea’s First Family but also as highly unfortunate for the growing human rights movement, which includes many Christians, opposed to the Park government, a military-backed regime. President Park was not injured in the attack. He apparently ducked a first bullet fired when a lone gunman ran up to the platform where the president was speaking in Seoul’s National Theater. A second bullet struck Mrs. Park, who sat behind her husband. The assailant was captured. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-8C-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: C-46054 MELKITE ARCHBISHOP RESIGNS HAIFA, Israel -- Melkite Catholic Archbishop Joseph Raya of Akka (Galilee) has announced his resignation as spiritual head of some 40,000 Melkites in northern Israel. He said his resignation was in protest against what he called “interference in the archdiocese by his Patriarch in Beirut, Lebanon -- Maximos V Hakim -- and by Pope Paul. The 57-year-old Lebanese-born prelate, a United States citizen, said he intended to return to the U.S. to go into seclusion to think and pray. He came to Israel from Birmingham, Ala., in December 1968. The unexpected decision to resign followed earlier statements by Archbishop Raya that Jerusalem should be recognized as Israeli -- and not “international” -- and his expressed support of Israeli authorities in the prosecution of Melkite Catholic Archbishop Ilarion Capucci of Jerusalem on charges of smuggling arms and explosives to Palestinian guerrillas. Bottoms, the first black person ever to be elected moderator of the 900,000-member Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (Southern). Dr. Bottoms, 66, the pastor of the predominantly white Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., won a first-ballot victory at the denomination’s 114th General Assembly in Louisville to succeed Dr. Kraemer as moderator. Dr. Bottoms had already set two other precedents in the 113-year-old PCUS, when he served as the first black moderator of the Louisville Presbytery and the first black moderator of any PCUS synod (Kentucky) -- both in 1963. Text transcribed from caption: C-45713 ROME’S GREAT BASILICAS -- HOLY YEAR SHRINES (Fourth of a Series) ROME -- Inside the Basilica of St. Paul’s-Outside-the-Walls, Corinthian columns support a procession of arches moving toward the apse. In contrast to the relatively simple exterior, the interior displays iridescent and striking mosaic decoration -- adapted from the Romans -- along the nave walls, on the “triumphal arch” leading into the apse, and on the apse itself. These mosaics are remnants saved from the fire which destroyed the old basilica and range in age from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-7B-74-DS)
