Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-45694 VISIT TO INDIA SALEM, India -- Philadelphia’s Cardinal John Krol traveled more than 9,000 miles to officiate at the ordination rites of Bishop Michael B. Duraisamy, the recently named spiritual leader of the Diocese of Salem in the South India State of Tamil Nadu. The Indian prelate came to know the American cardinal when he was a priest-student at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s when Cardinal Krol was an auxiliary bishop of the Cleveland diocese. In the left photo, Cardinal Krol participates in the Arati ceremony, which is Hindu in its origins but is used universally by all faiths in India. In the ceremony, an ointment of spices and sandalwood is placed on the forehead of one who comes in the name of God, with the residue then being sprinkled in the path of the visitor. Bishop Duraisamy is at right as two girls bring the ointment to the cardinal. At right, Cardinal Krol, who has removed his shoes, visits a Hindu temple in Salem. He said that there seems to be a friendly coexistence between the Hindu majority and the Christian minority in the area and that the priest’s clerical garb brings signs of instant respect from all segments of the population. Bishop Duraisamy, 43, is a native of the Salem area. His diocese, located in south central India near the border of the State of Kerala, which tradition says was evangelized by St. Thomas the Apostle, has 66,000 Catholics in a general population of 4.5 million. Text transcribed from caption: C-29843 GERMAN BISHOPS AID INDIA NEW DELHI -- Mrs. Indira Gandhi (center), daughter of Prime Minister Nehru, accepts a token gift of medical equipment from Father Frank Loesch of the Indo-German Social Service Society. The gift was symbolic of supplies donated by Misereor, overseas relief agency of the German hierarchy, for people in India’s North East Frontier region, the scene of the Chinese-Indian border war last year. Also shown is Father Ignatius Lobo, director of Indian Catholic Charities. To date, Misereor has given a total of $5,000,000 to aid Indian institutions and has arranged for technicians to initiate training programs in this country.
