- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30655 SEMINARY FIGHTS VOLCANIC ASH SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- The Latin American Biblical Seminary in San Jose has had a sizeable cleanup problem for the past year in removing volcanic ash from its roof and other parts of the building. The ash falls on the city at intervals from the Irazu volcano about 15 miles away. A seminary worker is shown clearing away some of the fallout from a roof gutter -- a job that must be done regularly. Officials of the seminary, sponsored by the Latin American Mission of San Jose, say the ash is not a menace, but a perennial nuisance. The Seminary prepares Christian workers for Spanish-speaking nations. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (LAM-2D-64-NAB)

Minutes before this photo was taken, Donald Scaar, student minister in his second year at Duke Divinity School, Durham, N.C., had placed his rustic cross at the water's edge. Soon worshippers from the nearby campground arrived for the scheduled Sunday service. To be ordained as a minister of the Reformed Church of America, Mr. Scaar is one of some 200 college and seminary students participating in the National Council of Churches' Ministry in the National Parks. Sister Mary Josanna, who teaches at St. Mary's School, Waukesha, Wis., was one of 300 nuns who were guests of the Augustinian Fathers at an outing at St. Monica's Seminary, Oconomowoc, Wis. Sisters of the Milwaukee archdiocese and the Madison diocese played softball, tennis, fished, took hay rides, had a picnic lunch. Star of the softball game, of course, was our nun at bat. Wisconsin fans may have to get used to nuns' baseball -- The Milwaukee Braves quite likely will move to Atlanta next year. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RJH-OC-9A-64-W)

- Seminarians' racial Christmas card.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31952 SEMINARIANS’ RACIAL CHRISTMAS CARD ST. PAUL, Minn. -- This unusual Christmas card was a result of the involvement of a group of seminarians in a racial justice project last summer in Mississippi. The greeting card reproduces a photo of a Negro boy in a Harlem slum. Participating in the racial project were about 100 students preparing for the priesthood at Nazareth Hall, minor seminary of the St. Paul archdiocese, in suburban Arden Hills. As a result of their work they were determined to have a “relevant” message dealing with racial justice on one of the Christmas card they prepare and sell annually. The card reads: “Christ is here. Go to meet Him. He is here…in His poor, in the afflicted, in the little ones, in those thirsting for justice, in His least brethren, in the crucified. Embrace Him.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (WT-MINN-12D-64-NAB)

- Clergyman killed in Alaska earthquake.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30834 CLERGYMAN KILLED IN ALASKA EARTHQUAKE SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Rev. L. Duane Carriker, 33, pastor of the Assemblies of God church in Valdez, Alaska, was the only clergyman known to have died in the 49th state’s disastrous earthquake. He was killed when a tidal wave swept him out to sea from a water-front dock. The minister is shown with his surviving wife, Yvonne, and their daughter, Janette Lou. The family also has a seven-year-old son. Mr. Carriker, formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa, attended the denomination’s Central Bible Institute in Springfield, world head-quarters of the Assemblies. He was ordained in 1962 and served other Alaska parishes, including Nome and McGrath. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AG-SPR-4B-64-NAB)
