- Title
- First missionary residence in Pyengyang.
- Description
- Korea (Chosen) Pyengyang - First missionary residence. This house, with about 30 acres of land, was the country estate, located just outside the walls of Pyengyang City, of a well-to-do Korean family. Using Han Suk Chin as intermediary Dr. Moffett bought this house and land for mission use in March 1893. Hearing of this the governor of Pyongon Province arrested Mr. Han and the Korean seller of the land and beat them until Dr. Moffett accepted the money back and the deal was cancelled. Two years later, in the spring of 1895, it was finally possible to purchase the same property and it became compound. About 1896 Graham Lee built another house which became the permanent Moffett home. This house was used 1900-1901 for the P.Y. Foreign School. The Bernheisels and others lived in this house for longer or shorter terms. The gentleman on the left in the picture is almost certainly Yang Chan Baek [Chinese symbols] who was, 1895-1900, evangelist for the whole Yalu River region, later pastor in Syen Chan. Richard H. Baird, May, '73.

- His goal: return to Korea.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31633 HIS GOAL: RETURN TO KOREA MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Two heart attacks within nine months won't prevent this missionary bishop's return to his See in Korea. Archbishop Harold Henry of Kwangju, a native of Minneapolis, is convalescing in that city pending doctor's permission to take up such Korean tasks as operator of the "largest piggy bank in the world." One of his "aid" programs in Kwangju saw him secure 523 purebred sows, building up a "piggy bank" which last year saw the archdiocese distribute 5,000 piglets to farmers. Archbishop Henry, by sending three nuns to Ireland to study the development of home-spun tweed from lamb's wool, provided a profitable at-home occupation for Korean women. His many "self-help" projects have drawn assistance from the U.S. Food for Peace Program and the German hierarchy -- gifts from the German prelates financed importation of Australian sheep. The 55-year-old prelate said he often borrows ideas developed by the 4-H Club movement in the U.S. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MS-MINN-9E-64-W)

- Ch'ungju Mission Station.
- Description
- A typical country school. Every well-ordered country community had a building of this kind. Primarily a school, it was also a community meeting place. Early missionaries always visited these "Keul Pangs" to present the gospel. The teacher probably lived in the enclosed room. He might be a man of good rank and education who had become impoverished.

- A typical country church in Ch'ungju or any other station area. Built entirely by the efforts of the local congregation, it would have a rice-straw thatched roof at first. - The eyes are ecumenical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31045 THE EYES ARE ECUMENICAL WALNUT CREEK, Cal. -- A Roman Catholic optometrist smiles as he watches hundreds of old eyeglasses, frames and lenses added to a growing pile destined for the Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Taegu, Korea. Head of the project, “Eyes for Korea,” is Dr. George Hurd, far left; helping the campaign, left to right, are Dr. Kan of Oakland, Cal., president of a two-country optometric society; and Mrs. Ross Griffin and Mrs. James Crosby of regional women’s groups. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. All are consigned to Dr. Howard Moffett, chief of the Presbyterian Medical Center at Taegu. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AKM-WC-5D-64-W)
