NORTH CHURCH OF PAUL REVERE FAME #1529 BOSTON -- The oldest church in this city, Christ Protestant Episcopal Church is one of the historical landmarks of the United States; for it was here, on April 19, 1775, from its tall steeple, that the signal lantern told Paul Revere of the march of the British troops to Lexington and Concord. The famous phrase, “One if by land, two if by sea” referred to those lanterns. At that time the edifice was known as Old North Church. It was erected 1723 and has been used practically without interruption since the last Sunday in December of that year except for a period during the Revolution when the church was closed “by military necessity.” (one of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BOST-MES-3A-6-ROTO-A-E-O)
