- Double trouble.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31015 DOUBLE TROUBLE KYOTO, Japan -- Will the real Ritsuko-chan please stand up? When Maryknoll Father Clarence J. Witte prepared to baptize a group of children at Kyoto, Japan, he was suddenly faced with identical twins. He had a list of baptismal names, but which was which--were Ritsuko-chan and Mitsuko-chan in the right order? The Maryknoller’s hunch was right; the twins quite innocently had switched seats. Parents and teachers confirmed the switch, so Father Witte went ahead with the baptism of the real Ritsuko-chan. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AN-OS-5C-64-W)

In bottom photo, some gifts are swapped or shown around to other children slow in reaching for a parachute. Carnivals are an unusual method used by missionaries to interest Japanese--particularly children--in the Church. Under a program of the Good Shepherd Movement in Kyoto, missionaries visit remote rural areas with tents, movies, loud speakers, leaflets--and toy parachutes--to help spread Christianity. - Missionary produces religious films.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32039 MISSIONARY PRODUCES RELIGIOUS FILMS KYOTO, Japan -- Father James F. Hyatt of Seattle, Wash., a Maryknoll missionary in Japan who produced the award-winning motion picture “Six People -- Ten Legs,” directs filming of a scene. The 30-minute, black-and-white movie won top prize last December at the First Pan-Asia Festival of the International Catholic Film Office (OCIC) in India. It was cited as the best film made in Asia “inspired by the cultural and artistic riches” of that continent. “Six People -- Ten Legs” tells the story of a ten-year-old crippled boy whose selfish attitude is dramatically changed by the kindness of his classmates. The film, seen on national TV in the U.S. and Japan was made in conjunction with the Maryknoll Fathers’ Good Shepherd Mass Communications Movement in Japan. - Dance depicts Christian life.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31794 DANCE DEPICTS CHRISTIAN LIFE TOKYO -- One of Japan’s leading classical dancers, Mrs. Futaba Hanayagi (center), has used the medium of which she is a master to express what Christianity has meant in her life. Accompanied by five dancers, she portrays her spiritual journey -- from the despair when illness threatened to end her career at the age of nineteen -- to the vigor, joy and gratitude that came when she became a Christian. Christian hymns, sung by a 20-voice choir and accompanied by classical Japanese instruments, provide background. The unique performance has been recorded on a 20-minute color film by the National Christian Council of Japan. It is available in the United Sates, with an English soundtrack, through the Radio, Visual Education and Mass Communication Committee (RAVEMCCO) of the National Council of Churches in New York. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31946 NEW TOKYO CATHEDRAL DEDICATED TOKYO -- This ultra-modern Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was dedicated by Peter Tatsuo Cardinal Doi, Archbishop of Tokyo, to replace the archdiocese’s church destroyed by fire in 1945. The $1.7 million structure is characterized by four step concrete roofs which also serve as walls, covering the entire sides. The four roofs meet in the center in the shape of cross more than 100 feet from the ground. Seating capacity of the nave is about 600 worshippers, with standing room for 2,000. Attending the ceremonies were thousands of faithful, Japanese government and business leaders and members of the foreign diplomatic corps. Pope Paul VI sent Cardinal Doi an artistically wrought chalice to be used in the cathedral, built with the aid of Catholics in Cologne, Germany, archdiocese.
