- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30843 WORLD ‘VATICAN’ OF MUSLIMS CAIRO -- The Al Azhar University in Cairo, more than 1,000 years old, is the Islamic “equivalent” of the Vatican in Rome for Muslims, who make up the world’s largest organized non-Christian religion. Housed in the university is the Higher Council for Islamic Studies which is conducting a massive revival of Islamic culture in Africa and elsewhere. The Council co-sponsored a month-long first Pan-Islamic Congress at the University attended by some 100 Muslim leaders from 70 countries. It consists of 17 Egyptian and eight foreign ulemas (religious). Bottom photo shows Muslims kneeling in prayer to Allah. Muslims are followers of Muhammed (570-632), who announced himself as the prophet of Allah.
