- Cardinal visits Soldiers Home.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30812 CARDINAL VISITS SOLDIERS HOME CHELSEA, Mass. -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, while visiting war veterans at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea borrowed an expression from his Irish ancestors and “took to the bed.” Touring the hospital wards, the cardinal spied an empty bed and promptly climbed into it. He quipped as the patients roared with laughter: “I belong here and I may stay the night.” While on his rounds, Cardinal Cushing stopped to sing a duet with 72-year-old Jacob Mulsman, a Jewish veteran of World War I. “I’m celebrating Passover with the best Jew in Massachusetts,” the prelate remarked. Above, the Kennedy brothers are shown as they presented a check for $1,178,000 to the then Archbishop Richard J. Cushing of Boston. The funds, from the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, were used for four archdiocesan projects. The foundation was named for the President’s older brother Joseph, killed in World War II. In this photo, Ted Kennedy is at left, Robert at right. Below, the first Catholic president of the United States receives a gift from Pope Paul VI at Vatican City. The gift was a model of the Pieta, Michelangelo’s masterpiece which will be exhibited at the Vatican Pavilion during the New York World’s Fair. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30504 MASS, MOZART'S REQUIEM HONOR KENNEDY BOSTON -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, greets Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and Sen. Edward Kennedy at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross where a religious and civic memorial honored the late President Kennedy. A Solem Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated by the cardinal before some 1,800 invited guests including Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish clergymen, federal officials and state and civic dignitaries. The service was seen by millions over network television. Mozart's Requiem in D Minor, with Erich Leinsdorf conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a 180-voice choir, was heard during the Mass. In a eulogy following the Mass, Cardinal Cushing observed that the musical genius of Mozart and the genius of President Kennedy's leadership had been linked in the religious and civic memorial which had rich ecumenical and cultural overtones. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30511 CARDINAL INTRODUCED AT METHODIST CHURCH SUDBURY, Mass. -- Seated with clergymen of the Sudbury (Mass.) Council of Churches, Richard Cardinal Cushing, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston, is shown as he was introduced to a large audience at the Sudbury Methodist Church. Cardinal Cushing (hand on chin) is introduced by the Rev. Blaine Taylor (standing) of the host congregation. In a 90-minute talk, followed by a half hour question-answer period, Cardinal Cushing recognized Protestantism's early start in ecumenism ("Catholics have a long way to catch up"), held that the "spirit of the scholars" must reach the grassroots level if the ecumenical movement is to advance, and foresaw "unity of the spirit," not union, in this century. The occasion was a breakfast meeting of Temple Emeth’s Brotherhood in Newton, Mass., which the cardinal addressed. The skull cap was given to the prelate by Rabbi Zev K. Nelson, the synagogue’s spiritual leader (left). Looking on is Abraham Naterman, president of the Brotherhood. Cardinal Cushing wore the cap as he told the Jewish laymen: “We are all, Jews and Gentiles, equally guilty of the Crucifixion, assuming He was crucified to atone for the sins of mankind.” He reported that he was scheduled to address at least ten Jewish and some 40 Protestant groups this year.
