- Text transcribed from caption: P-31611 SPIRITUAL HEALING CONFERENCE PHILADELPHIA -- Dr. Klaus Thomas (left), German Lutheran pastor-psychiatrist widely known for his suicide prevention clinic in West Berlin, talks with Dr. Alfred W. Price, warden of the Order of St. Luke the Physician, who presided at the ninth annual International Conference on Spiritual Healing at Philadelphia's St. Stephen's Episcopal church. The order, while having predominant Episcopalian leadership, has assumed worldwide, interdenominational leadership in the last 14 years. Attendance at the conference's 12 sessions exceeded 7,000. Dr. Thomas currently is spending a year as a consultant at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. He is an associate warden of the Order of St. Luke. With him are Stuart Hubbell, left, a Catholic and prosecuting attorney of Travers City, Mich., who was elected president of the CEF, and Dr. Edwin H. Palmer of Westminster Theological Seminary, an independent Protestant school in Philadelphia. Dr. Palmer, a trustee of the group, won the annual CEF award for his contribution to the recognition of constitutional and civil rights of parents and children in church-related schools. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30319 CATHOLIC OBSERVERS AT NATIONAL COUNCIL ASSEMBLY PHILADELPHIA -- Msgr. Joseph N. Moody of Highland Falls, N.Y., (left), and Msgr. Daniel Cantwell of Chicago (right) were two of five official Catholic observers at the triennial General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Philadelphia. Msgr. Moody is head of Ladycliffe [sic] College’s Social Science Department, and Msgr. Cantwell is chaplain for the Catholic Council on Working Life and the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago. They are shown with Dr. Franklin H. Littell of Chicago Theological Seminary, a major speaker at the assembly attended by representatives of 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. The other three Catholic observers were Father Benjamin Masse, S.J., of New York; Father Dennis J. Comey, S.J., of Philadelphia, and Msgr. John P. Connery of Overbrook, Pa. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30348 NCC DELEGATES PRESS FOR CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION PHILADELPHIA -- Two busloads of delegates and official visitors, a total of about 80 men and women, left the National Council of Churches’ triennial General Assembly at Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 6 for a one-day journey to Washington, D.C., to contact legislators and personally urge speedy passage of pending civil rights legislation. The trip followed Assembly approval of a resolution seeking accelerated Christian pressure on Congressmen to force the bill out of committee and onto the floor of the House of Representatives for debate. J. Irwin Miller, outgoing NCC president, (third from right, front row) greets Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop B. Julian Smith of Chicago and other travelers on their return to Philadelphia. Also welcoming the returning group (second from left) was Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC head. Bishop Mueller, who comes from Indianapolis, Ind., was elected to the National Council post at its triennial General Assembly in Philadelphia. As NCC president, he heads the largest non-Catholic church organization in this country, representing 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies with more than 40,000,000 members. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30317 NCC HOLDS KENNEDY MEMORIAL SERVICE PHILADELPHIA -- President Kennedy, who was to have addressed the National Council of Churches’ General Assembly in Philadelphia, was memorialized at a special service held at the sessions. Officiating at the service were, left to right, J. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC president; Bishop George W. Baber of Philadelphia, African Methodist Episcopal Church; and Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, stated clerk, United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Bishop Baber read the litany and Dr. Blake led the worship service. It was attended by representatives of the NCC’s 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31738 NCCJ EXAMINES RESPONSIBILITIES IN CHANGING TIMES PHILADELPHIA -- Some 130 officials of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, concerned with responsibility for the public order, met in Philadelphia to discuss the civil rights struggle, the urban crisis and the interreligious situation. Shown at a luncheon held in connection with a national staff meeting are from left: Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the NCCJ; and Philip Scharper, editor-in-chief of Sheed & Ward publishing house in New York, who spoke on the religious relevance to the temporal order.
