- Pieta's safe arrival.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30877 PIETA’S SAFE ARRIVAL NEW YORK -- Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully, uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

- Charred Cross -- symbol of reconciliation.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30864 CHARRED CROSS -- SYMBOL OF RECONCILIATION NEW YORK -- In solemn services in the Music Garden at the rear of the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair, the famed Charred Cross of Coventry Cathedral in England was dedicated as a reminder of the Christian message of reconciliation. Made from two charred oak beams that fell from the roof of the cathedral as it was destroyed in a 9140 German bombing raid, the Cross and the adjoining inscription, “Father Forgive,” will be on exhibit at the pavilion for the two years of the Fair. Dr. H.C.N. Williams (at far left), provost of Coventry Cathedral, presented the cross and a smaller Cross of Nails, made from 14th-century hand-forged nails, as symbols of the Christian message that “crucifixion must always be followed by resurrection.” Others taking part in the service (from left to right) were: Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, New York, and chairman of the committee of the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches which arranged for display of the Cross; Dr. Arthur Lee Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, sponsor of the world’s fair pavilion; Dr. Cynthia C. Wedel of New York, assistant general secretary for program, National Council of Churches; Greek Orthodox Archdeacon Polycarp; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and a WCC president; Charles C. Parlin of New York, Methodist layman and a WCC president, and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Horace W.B. Donegan of New York. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BS-NY-4C-64-NBM)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30913 SUNBURST TOWER MARKS BILLY GRAHAM PAVILION NEW YORK -- The Billy Graham Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair, located near the main entrance, promised on opening day to be among the most heavily attended religious buildings at the exposition. Marked by a glistening sunburst tower and surrounded by fountains and outdoor hanging gardens, the pavilion features a theater which shows an evangelistic film narrated by Mr. Graham. On hand are many counselors, prepared to maintain an ongoing “crusade” in behind-the-screen rooms for viewers who respond to the film’s appeal. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30914 MORMON TEMPLE FACADE BECKONS FAIR VISITORS NEW YORK -- Towering pillars, columns and spires are located throughout the 646-acres of the New York World’s Fair, and among the most impressive is the front facade of the Mormon Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah. A large reflecting pool is in front of the tall structure, which is topped by a gold statue of the Angel Moroni. Dioramas, statuary and a twin theater are main features of the pavilion. A 15-minute film, “Man’s Search for Happiness,” is offered on a staggered schedule in both theaters. Except for minor finishing touches, the pavilion was ready for the Fair’s opening on April 22 and drew large crowds. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RNS-NY-4D-64-NBM)

- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30894 SUDAN MADONNA AT NEW YORK WORLD’S FAIR NEW YORK -- One of the oldest Madonna and Child painting ever discovered will be on display in the Pavilion of The Sudan at the New York World’s Fair. Found by archaeologists in northern Sudan last year, the painting on sandbrick adorned the wall of an ancient church. Because the delicate fresco, estimated to be from 1,000 to 1,200 years old, has been covered by sand for centuries, its colors have been vividly preserved. The discovery came during efforts to save as many artifacts as possible from an area soon to be flooded by backwaters of the Aswan Dam, being built down the Nile by the United Arab Republic. The Madonna is six feet square and weighs 1,000 pounds. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (WF-NY-4D-64-NBM)

At left, an Amarakaeri Indian boy in the jungles of the Upper Amazon in Peru studies a primer. His language, unwritten until five years ago, was mastered by a Wycliffe linguist, Robert Tripp. At right, a Campa Indian girl is being taught to write by Willard R. Kennedy International Airport. With the famed Charred Cross of Coventry, the Cross of Nails will be on display at the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair. Some 30 of the crosses, with the nails silver-plated on a velvet covered board, have been presented to churches around the world as a symbol of the Christian message of reconciliation. Examining the cross, from left, are Ralph E. Esterich and Dennis K. Kelly, U.S. Customs officials; Dr. James W. Kennedy, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in New York, and Dr. Ben Mohr Herbster, New York, president of the United Church of Christ. The churchmen represented the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches, which arranged for the display of the Charred Cross and Cross of Nails at the Fair.
