- Two nuns attended the section dealing with \u201ctreatment of religious viewpoints in the public school curriculum\u201d attracted three times as many delegates and observers as any other group meeting at the National Conference on Religion and Public Education held under the auspices of the National Council of Churches. The section divided into three smaller groups to discuss curriculum and one of them is shown here. At end in background are the section chairman, Dr. Harold A. Pflug of Webster Grove, Mo., and on his right, the recorder, Mrs. Gerald Walsh of Syracuse, N.Y.

Cap., of Milwaukee, vice-president; Father Bernardin Patterson, O.S.B., of South Union, Ky., president; Father Clement Faistl, of Columbus, Ohio, secretary; and Father Philip Allen, of Wichita, Kans., treasurer. Father Bernardin, prior of St. Maur’s Priory, South Union, Ky., is the first Negro to head a Benedictine monastery in the United States. Father Godfrey Diekmann, O.S.B., of St. John's Benedictine Abbey, Collegeville, Minn., distributes Holy Communion to Father H.A. Reinhold of Pittsburgh. Father Diekmann, editor of Worship magazine, and Father Reinhold, a member of the National Catholic Liturgical Conference's board of directors, were pioneers in the U.S. liturgical movement. Picture was taken during the third 'English' Mass celebrated at the convention. In August, 1961, Father Reinhold predicted that the vernacular would be adopted by the Second Vatican Council, holding that "we (the U.S.) have more reason to be for the vernacular than any nation." He is the first Negro to head the 55-year-old organization. The federation also named Dr. Ned Cole (right), dean of Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal), as "Ecumenical Man of the Year for 1963" for his ministry in his congregation, the federation and the community. Dr. Cole has been elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and plans to move to Syracuse, N.Y., in the spring.
