- Clergyman arrested in anti-segregation fight.
- Description
- Protestant, Catholic and Jewish clergymen have been among some 300 persons arrested in a series of efforts to integrate the privately owned Gwynn Oak Amusement Park. In one of the anti-segregation demonstrations outside the park, a minister donned a red, white and blue "Uncle Sam" outfit to symbolize the fight for racial equality. He was promptly arrested on trespassing charges. The clergyman, the Rev. David Andrews, assistant chaplain at Morgan State College, is shown here being taken into custody by police.

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: United Presbyterians Elect Black Woman. Baltimore -- Dr. Thelma Davidson Adair, 55, of New York City, was chosen as the first black woman moderator of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. during its General Assembly in Baltimore. An unprecedented four ballots were needed for her election to a one-year term as the denomination's top elected official. The General Assembly also elected another woman, Martha P. Martin of Cincinnati, as their vice-moderator for the year ahead. Dr. Adair is an elder (lay leader) of the Mount Morris Presbyterian Church in Harlem, of which her husband is pastor. She has taught at all levels, from college to nursery school, and has held many church posts.

- Santa is a cop with a happy summons.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PHOTO NUMBER: PC-50607 SANTA IS A COP WITH A HAPPY SUMMONS BALTIMORE, Md. -- While many police departments are using decoy Santas to catch thieves during the holiday season, the Baltimore City Police are using one to put summons on parked cars. When the motorist takes time to read it, he discovers that it is not for a parking violation, but a summons to have a happy holiday and a reminder to lock his car. The imaginative approach is part of the department's anti-crime campaign. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BAL-12B-77-JH)

- Prayer foe altars sign.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30619 PRAYER FOE ALTARS SIGN BALTIMORE, Md. -- The woman who successfully opposed prayer and Bible reading in Baltimore's public schools alters a billboard advertising the program of the Constitutional Prayer Foundation. Mrs. Madalyn Murray added "Un" to "constitutional" to the sign stationed next to her Freethought Society of America office. The Constitutional Prayer Foundation endorses school prayer. Plaintiff in the suit which brought the U.S. Supreme Court decision against devotional acts in the public schools, Mrs. Murray heads a group she calls "Other Americans, Inc." In late 1963 she acquired title to 80 acres of land near Stockton, Kans., where she plans to establish an atheistic center. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-2C-64-W)
