- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30628 ECUMENICAL SPIRIT HAILED AT BROTHERHOOD EVENT NEW YORK -- An interreligious audience of some 1,200 at a Brotherhood Week luncheon in New York heard Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston (second from left), cite recent gains in the ecumenical movement and call for increased contacts and conversations among men of various faiths. Other participants included (from left to right) included: Rabbi Israel Mowshowitz, former president of the New York Board of Rabbis, who gave a brief address in response to the cardinal; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, who delivered the invocation; Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, which annually sponsors Brotherhood Week, and the Rev. Edler G. Hawkins, pastor of St. Augustine United Presbyterian Church in New York, who gave the benediction. The luncheon was sponsored by the Manhattan region of the NCCJ. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30725 AT FORDHAM'S EASTERN RITE LITURGY NEW YORK -- Father Andrew Rogosh, assistant secretary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (with mitre), preached the sermon at a concelebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine-Romanian Rite in St. Patrick's Cathedral, held as part of the 26th annual Conference on Eastern Rites and Liturgies. The conference was sponsored by Fordham University. During the Mass, Father Rogosh was blessed as the only priest in this country to be made a Protopresbyter, a distinction in the Byzantine Rite resembling the rank of Protonotary Apostolic in the Roman Rite. Shown at the liturgy are, left to right: Bishop Stephen J. Kocisko of the Passaic, N.J. Byzantine Rite diocese; Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Father Rogosh; Bishop Joseph Schmondiuk of the Stamford, Conn., Ukrainian Rite diocese; Armenian Rite Father Paschal Maljian of New York; and Msgr. Joseph T. - Text transcribed from caption: #926 HOEY AWARDS PRESENTED The James J. Hoey Awards for Interracial Justice for 1945 were presented to Paul D. Williams, vice president of the National Council of Catholic Men, and Richmond Barthe, Catholic Negro sculptor, at a ceremony in New York attended by 300 Negro and White Catholics. The awards are sponsored by the Catholic Interracial Council of New York and are given to the two Catholic laymen, Negro and White, who have done most during the year to promote interracial justice. Shown left to right are: A. Philip Randolph, international president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters; Paul D. Williams; Bishop Vincent S. Waters of Raleigh, N.C., who presented the awards; Richmond Barthe; and the Rev. John LaFarge, S.J., chaplain of the Catholic Interracial Council.
