- Text transcribed from caption: C-29717 AFRICAN CARDINAL BECOMES NAACP MEMBER INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Laurian Cardinal Rugambwa, Bishop of Bukoba, Tanganyika, is shown as he received a life membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The African prelate had contributed $500 toward the work of the organization. The presentation took place during the annual meeting of the Knights of St. Peter Claver at Indianapolis. Indiana’s Governor Matthew E. Welsh and Mrs. Welsh look on as Henry J. Richardson, Jr., at left, a member of the NAACP national board, presents a life membership plaque to Cardinal Rugambwa.
