- Text transcribed from caption: P-30927 PROTESTANT AND ORTHODOX CENTER FORMALLY OPENED NEW YORK -- Three leading churchmen taking part in services formally dedicating the Protestant and Orthodox Center at the New York World’s Fair stand in the Court of Protestant Pioneers (top photo) at the entrance to the $3 million structure. From left to right, they are: Dr. Arthur L. Kinsolving, rector of St. James Episcopal church, New York, and president of the Protestant Council of the City of New York, which is sponsoring the pavilion; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, and Dr. R.H. Edwin Espy, executive secretary of the National Council of Church. - Text transcribed from caption: PN-31024 WOMAN ORDAINED IN AME CHURCH NEW YORK -- Mrs. Lillian Webb, a secretary in the National Council of Churches’ Department of Stewardship and Benevolence, is the first woman to be ordained as an itinerant minister in the New York Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She is congratulated here by the Rev. Malcolm Blackburn, associate executive director of the department, which she will continue to serve. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31048 FATHER ABBOTT HEADS LAFARGE INSTITUTE For Release: Wed., May 27, or later NEW YORK -- Father Walter M. Abbott, S. J., associate editor of America, is director of the new John LaFarge Institute being launched in New York by the national Catholic weekly. The institute will promote the cooperation and fellowship “of all men of goodwill” in seeking to cope with inter-group and other community problems. Bottom photo shows Father LaFarge for whom the institute is named. The Jesuit priest, who died last November, is shown with African Methodist Episcopal Bishop George W. Baber of Philadelphia at the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Father Abbott, prominent in the ecumenical movement, advocates a common Bible for all English-speaking Christians. Father LaFarge was a leader in the Catholic interracial and interreligious movements, as well as an editor of America. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31821 MARIST NUN GETS JESUIT MISSION AWARD NEW YORK -- Sister Mary Augustine, public relations director of the Marist Missionary Sisters, receives the Xavier Award for outstanding zeal and devotion to the cause of foreign missions. The award was presented at the annual Jesuit Mission dinner in New York by Father John J. McGinty, S.J., provincial of the Jesuits’ New York Province (second left). Looking on are Father Robert I. Gannon, S.J., superior of the Jesuit Missions residence, New York, who served as toastmaster (left); and Auxiliary Bishop John J. Maguire of New York. Father Gannon told about 1,600 guests at the dinner that in naming Sister Mary Augustine, the Jesuits honored all modern missionaries laboring in public relations. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31744 CHAPLAIN TO AFRICAN CATHOLIC STUDENTS NEW YORK -- Father William T. Anderson, S.M., chaplain to African Catholic college students since 1963, has a “campus” which covers most of the continent below the Sahara. In his ministry he travels extensively, visiting 37 colleges and universities and working with 40 other priest-chaplains. Of the 37 schools of higher learning, 14 are in South Africa, and only one of them is Catholic -- the Lovanium in Leopoldville, the Congo. Father Anderson’s post is that of chaplain of the African Secretariat of Pax Romana, an international Catholic student movement. He was in Washington, D.C. recently for a Pax Romana meeting. Concerning his work as a roving missionary for campuses, the Cleveland-born priest believes that the best hope for Africa’s future lies in the native Catholic student. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31711 EDITH STEIN’S SISTER AT AWARD CEREMONY NEW YORK -- Shown standing before a portrait of Edith Stein, a Jewish Carmelite nun who died in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942, is Dr. Erna Biberstein, center, the nun’s sister and only surviving member of their family. With her, at the Edith Stein Guild’s annual Communion breakfast, are Mary Di Blasi, vice-president of the Guild, and Father Victor J. Donovan, C.P., of West Hartford, Conn., a past winner of the group’s citation. This year’s Edith Stein Award was presented at the breakfast to the Paulist Press for fostering better relations among Christians and Jews. The Guild, founded in 1955, promotes Jewish-Christian understanding and aids Jewish converts to Catholicism. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31733 MICHELANGELO’S PIETA ‘STORED’ FOR WINTER NEW YORK -- Michelangelo’s world famous Pieta -- seen by 13.8 million people at the New York World’s Fair -- is “stored” away for the winter until the fair reopens in April. As part of security measures a cage surround the priceless sculpture which will remain in its same location at the Vatican Pavilion. Closing the cage are Msgr. John J. Gorman, the pavilion’s director (left); and Father Joseph T. Lahey, assistant director.
