- Detroit congregation in 'Catacombs'
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30746 DETROIT CONGREGATION IN 'CATACOMBS' DETROIT -- A pastor reads an ancient litany by flickering candlelight to members of his congregation gathered in a basement. "We're trying to emphasize the basic elements of primitive Christian fellowship and worship," said the Rev. Alan J. Kieffer of Prince of Glory Lutheran church in Detroit, Mich., as he explained the simulated "catacomb" service. "We want to remember the early setting of the church, the persecution, the necessity of secretiveness." To do this, the congregational groups met in private basements for their Wednesday evening Lenten services. Meditations stressed that the church today "cannot remain hidden" but "must come out of hiding and bear a fearless witness," the pastor said. At right, homemade candles illuminate the catacomb symbol of a fish under the Greek word for the fish, "Ichthus." Prince of Glory Church is a congregation of the Lutheran Church in America. - Ministry to the marketplace.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31911 MINISTRY TO THE MARKETPLACE CHICAGO -- Plans for a new “Agora” (marketplace) ministry center being established in a shopping area in Chicago are examined by Architect H. James Hestrup (left) and the Rev. Donald N. Kelly, a minister of the United Church of Christ. A project of the United Church’s Board for Homeland Ministries, the ministry will not have a congregation as such but will be maintained by a “steering committee” of laymen with Mr. Kelly as “director.” Members of the “Agora” group will make their Christian witness to four segments of the non-residential community -- merchandisers, professional people, commercial and industrial executives and workers and faculty and students at nearby seminaries.
