- Nun is among DPs bound for America.
- Description
- Jewish and Catholic -- all equally freedom bound. Bremerhaven, Germany ... equally happy over their journey to freedom are Jewish, Protestant, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Catholic displaced persons from Eastern Europe being brought to the United States. Some of the many who made up the cargo of the U.S. Army transport General William M. Black -- the first DP ship U.S. bound -- are pictured having one of their last meals in Europe before boarding the transport. Gathered around the table at left are Orthodox Jews, whose dietetic laws are strictly observed at the DP deport -- a "kosher" sign marks their table. At right a Catholic nun, who refused to give her name, shyly laughs and eats. She is very happy to be leaving Germany for the freedom of the United States.

- NCC president visits, denounces Berlin Wall.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30794 NCC PRESIDENT VISITS, DENOUNCES BERLIN WALL BERLIN -- The infamous wall built by Communists to divide East and West Berlin stands as a “silent and tragic witness” to man’s failure to understand and accept the Christian gospel, it was stated by Bishop Reuben H. Mueller of Indianapolis, Ind., president of the National Council of Churches, as he viewed the barricade (top photo) during a Holy Week visit to U.S. military personnel in Spain and Germany. In addition to bringing greetings from hometown churches to servicemen and women, the Evangelical United Brethren Church leader met with government and religious leaders in Germany and preached at an ecumenical service at West Berlin’s Kaiser Friedrich Memorial church (bottom photo). In his sermon he said it was his desire, and that of the U.S. government, that he spend Good Friday through Easter in Berlin because the city “with its wall and problems is for all of Christianity the City of Good Friday.” He declared: “Whoever shares concern about mankind’s future must share Berlin’s concerns.” The American churchman was welcomed to Germany by Bishop Otto Dibelius of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg (seated right, bottom photo). - Text transcribed from caption: C-31557 200,000 AT GERMAN CATHOLIC CONGRESS STUTTGART, Germany -- Concelebration of an out-door Latin Rite Mass -- the first in Germany--marked the opening of the 80th German Catholic Day Congress (Katholikentag) in Stuttgart. Top photo shows Jozef Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, and 20 priests with whom he concelebrated the Mass. Photo below shows the closing rally in which 200,000 persons gathered in a demonstration of religious unity. The rally featured a Bible-centered "Word of God" service. To emphasize Scripture as a "pillar of fair," a Bible was placed on an elevated platform, flanked by a huge Crucifix. Prayers were said not only for the Church but for all non-Catholic Christians. Another Mass also was concelebrated on the closing day by Archbishop Corrado Bafile, Papal Nuncio to Germany, and 20 other clergy. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KV-BER-9B-64-NAB)

Martin Pirol (second from left) leaves an automobile factory at Cologne, Germany, with other assembly line workers at the end of a shift. Mr. Pirol and two other clergymen received permission from Church authorities to join the work force at the factory in order to gain first-hand knowledge of "the suffering of the people." At the end of several months they hailed the "fellowship" project as a success, saying the work experience had given them new understanding of their pastoral duties.
