- Day nursery at the Peking Union Women's Bible Training School, 1951.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: This Day Nursery at the Peking Union Women's Bible Training School was part of the practical experience of the young women attending the school. The underprivileged children who attended had never before had any organized play or instruction. The teacher on the right, Miss Hsu Hsiu-Kuei, herself had a most unusual background. Her stern Confucianist father would not allow her to be educated, for according to his religion woman were not worth educating. But the girl would daily climb the high wall behind their home and eavesdrop on the boys learning their lessons at the boys school. The whole family was astounded one day to find that their daughter knew more than their sons. The father then relented and let his daughter attend school. Two of her Christian poems are to be found in Cynthia Pearl Maus' "The World's Greatest Madonnas", page 391. Right after the war she won a UN scholarship to finish her college course.
