- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31459 REUTHER ADDRESSES YOUNG LUTHERANS DETROIT -- Detroit's huge Cobo Hall was filled to capacity for an address by Walter Reuther, president of the United Automobile Workers, to the convention of the Luther League of the American Lutheran Church. His appearance was protested in advance of the convention by a small faction that claimed Mr. Reuther "denies God." ALC youth officials defended the labor leader and the 12,000 young people gave him standing ovations at the start and finish of his talk. Mr. Reuther called on Luther Leaguers to demonstrate "hope, faith and love" in conflict with "forces of hatred." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AL-DM-8E-64-NBM)

The Concept-East is an off-Broadway type of theater which, located in an oldtime barroom, now offers culture instead of beer. One of the first works presented was by the Rev. Malcolm Boyd, left, Protestant Episcopal clergyman long active in youth and race relations work. With him are Woodie King, center, and Cliff Frazier, actors in the minister’s play, “The Community.” Productions are carried on in a coffeehouse atmosphere. - Detroit congregation in 'Catacombs'
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30746 DETROIT CONGREGATION IN 'CATACOMBS' DETROIT -- A pastor reads an ancient litany by flickering candlelight to members of his congregation gathered in a basement. "We're trying to emphasize the basic elements of primitive Christian fellowship and worship," said the Rev. Alan J. Kieffer of Prince of Glory Lutheran church in Detroit, Mich., as he explained the simulated "catacomb" service. "We want to remember the early setting of the church, the persecution, the necessity of secretiveness." To do this, the congregational groups met in private basements for their Wednesday evening Lenten services. Meditations stressed that the church today "cannot remain hidden" but "must come out of hiding and bear a fearless witness," the pastor said. At right, homemade candles illuminate the catacomb symbol of a fish under the Greek word for the fish, "Ichthus." Prince of Glory Church is a congregation of the Lutheran Church in America.
