- Mexico greets the Christ child.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: MEXICO GREETS THE CHRIST CHILD #1181 In all Mexican homes, no matter how humble, reproductions of the Manger, showing the Christ Child lying in His crib and with Mary and Joseph kneeling beside Him, are placed under the Christmas tree. An elaborate tableau on display in a Mexican store reproduces every detail of Bethlehem scene 2000 years ago. A star shines over the cave where Mary and Joseph adore the new-born Christ, while round about are placed skilfully [sic] carved figures of other participants in the first Christmas, including the Shepherds and the three Wise Men from the East. - "Borda gives to God."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ‘BORDA GIVES TO GOD’ #C-1347 TASCO, Mexico [sic] -- Few churches in the world have been founded under more unusual circumstances than this magnificent edifice here which was completed in 1757. The man who built it was a French miner, Joseph le Borde, called by the Mexicans Jose de la Borda. The story is that one day la Borda, downcast over a streak of bad luck, was on his way to Mexico City when his mule’s hoof sank into the ground and stuck there. Borda dismounted and examined the ground. There he discovered evidence of a vein of silver, from which he was to amass a huge fortune. The incident restored his faith and he decided to erect a church dedicated to San Sebastian and Santa Prisca; hence the Mexican saying, “God gives to Borda, Borda gives to God.” The mines discovered by Borda still produce vast quantities of silver. Tasco itself has been declared a national monument by the Mexican Government and building construction is not permitted unless approved by the national art commission. - Santa Claus wins against Aztec God.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: SANTA CLAUS WINS AGAINST AZTEC GOD #S-1224 MEXICO CITY -- That the Mexican government has lost its fight to institute the Aztec God, Quetzalcoatl, as the symbol of Santa Claus in the Republic is shown in this picture taking at exercises terminating the school holiday in Tlalpan, suburb of Mexico City. For several years a movement has been under way to supplant Saint Nicholas, the jolly bewhiskered Santy Claus beloved by children of every land, with a flamboyant, befeathered Indian. Quetzalcoatl may have served very well to brighten little Aztec hearts centuries ago, but Santy Claus is the guy, according to these eleven little Mexican students.
