- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30947 ALABAMA ARCHBISHOP ORDERS CATHOLIC SCHOOL INTEGRATION MOBILE, Ala. -- Archbishop Thomas J. Toolen, Bishop of Mobile-Birmingham, has ordered integration of all Catholic elementary and high schools in his diocese beginning in September. Announced in a pastoral letter read in diocesan churches, the order will affect parochial schools in Alabama and 11 counties of West Florida. Alabama has about 25,000 students in 80 Catholic elementary and 13 secondary schools, with about 5,000 Negroes. - Cardinal's efforts for Israel disclosed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30812 CARDINAL VISITS SOLDIERS HOME CHELSEA, Mass. -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, while visiting war veterans at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea borrowed an expression from his Irish ancestors and “took to the bed.” Touring the hospital wards, the cardinal spied an empty bed and promptly climbed into it. He quipped as the patients roared with laughter: “I belong here and I may stay the night.” While on his rounds, Cardinal Cushing stopped to sing a duet with 72-year-old Jacob Mulsman, a Jewish veteran of World War I. “I’m celebrating Passover with the best Jew in Massachusetts,” the prelate remarked. - His goal: return to Korea.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31633 HIS GOAL: RETURN TO KOREA MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Two heart attacks within nine months won't prevent this missionary bishop's return to his See in Korea. Archbishop Harold Henry of Kwangju, a native of Minneapolis, is convalescing in that city pending doctor's permission to take up such Korean tasks as operator of the "largest piggy bank in the world." One of his "aid" programs in Kwangju saw him secure 523 purebred sows, building up a "piggy bank" which last year saw the archdiocese distribute 5,000 piglets to farmers. Archbishop Henry, by sending three nuns to Ireland to study the development of home-spun tweed from lamb's wool, provided a profitable at-home occupation for Korean women. His many "self-help" projects have drawn assistance from the U.S. Food for Peace Program and the German hierarchy -- gifts from the German prelates financed importation of Australian sheep. The 55-year-old prelate said he often borrows ideas developed by the 4-H Club movement in the U.S. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MS-MINN-9E-64-W)

- Migrant workers' children confirmed.
- Description
- C-31393 MIGRANT WORKERS' CHILDREN CONFIRMED STURGEON BAY, Wis. -- Auxiliary Bishop John B. Grellinger of Green Bay, Wis., administers Confirmation to children of migrant workers in St. Joseph's church, Sturgeon Bay. They were among some 500 children who made their Confirmation and received their First Holy Communion in two churches of the Green Bay diocese. The rites climaxed the diocese's 17th annual apostolate to migrant workers in the state. The children received their instructions for the Sacraments from about 200 lay volunteers, who also taught hundreds of other youths and adults. Several centers are operated by the diocese for the spiritual and material welfare of thousands of Spanish-speaking farm workers who come to Wisconsin for the Summer harvest.
