- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31339 FIRST ELECTRIC FIXTURE IN ANY CHURCH ROSELLE, N.J. -- This is the first electric fixture installed in a church anywhere in the world. Thomas A. The church was re-built, but the fixture remained in storage until about six months ago when it was restored (right) by Lightolier in Jersey City, N.J. - Ash Wednesday on commuter train.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32234 ASH WEDNESDAY ON COMMUTER TRAIN HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The benediction is pronounced as Lackawanna Train 606 pulls into Hoboken, N.J. Commuters bound for New York sat with bared heads as the Rev. Craig Biddle III, curate of St. Peter’s Episcopal church, Morristown, N.J., held a 20-minute service on Ash Wednesday. The mobile worship experience, he told the smoking-car congregation, was not an attempt “to play church or perform an experiment -- this service is basically taking the ritual of the commuter and adding it to the liturgy of the church.” Many of the commuters were enthusiastic about the service and expressed home they would be continued. - Teenagers enthusiastic in anti-polio campaign.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32045 TEENAGERS ENTHUSIASTIC IN ANTI-POLIO CAMPAIGN (No. 3 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- Teenagers in a predominantly Negro-Puerto Rican section of Newark, N.J., at first laughed, then became enthusiastic participants in pilot program to induce residents to accept the Sabin oral vaccine against polio. The young people -- enlisted by clergymen and community leaders -- formed door-knocking teams, brought neighborhood gangs into the campaign and gave instructions to their parents, many of whom speak no English. Their efforts are depicted in a film being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service, “To Open a Door,” as an aid to community leaders in their efforts to reach sections of the population who need encouragement before taking advantage of available drugs and vaccines.
