- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30685 VOLUNTEERS BOLSTER CHURCH RELIEF EFFORTS HAITI -- Dr. Charles L. Peterson, physician from Portland, Ore., examines a mother and Voodoo charm-wearing child in Haiti's hurricane-stricken area. One of 41 volunteers dispatched to the disaster section under auspices of Church World Service, material aid agency for the National Council of Churches, Dr. Peterson headed a team which held clinics throughout rural villages, seeing some 500 patients daily. In addition to medical volunteers, construction and agricultural specialists took part in the emergency aid effort. - Church-aided Haitians build irrigation dam.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32078 CHURCH-AIDED HAITIANS BUILD IRRIGATION DAM HAITI -- Haitian women and children carry baskets of dirty and rock on their heads in a development project aided by Church World Service and CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program), the CWS community appeal. They received tools to build an irrigation dam and canals in parched farmlands and were paid in food and seeds, which will help them raise their own crops and eventually end the need for outside assistance.
