The churchmen were among more than 100 delegates of the denomination, a group described as a "first wave" of ministers and laymen who traveled to Washington, D.C., to urge passage of the legislation "without crippling amendments." KING MEETS WITH PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is escorted by Vice President Humphrey to the White House for a meeting with President Johnson to discuss the Negro voter registration drive in Selma, Ala. After the conference, the noted Negro Baptist leader said the President “made it clear to me that he plans to offer legislation to Congress specifically on voting rights.” Dr. King, winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, spent five days in the Dallas County, Ala., jail. Vice President Hubert Humphrey was sworn in minutes earlier by House Speaker John McCormack of Massachusetts. The Bible which Mrs. Johnson held had been given to the President’s family by his mother, Mrs. Rebekah Baines Johnson, 13 years ago when they moved to the LBJ ranch in Johnson City, Texas. The service was attended by about 50 Congressmen, armed forces officials, other government leaders and guests. National unity was the major theme of intercessory prayers.
