- Candlelight service for late President.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30390 CANDLELIGHT SERVICE FOR LATE PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Johnson, the First Lady and their daughter, Lucy Baines, hold lighted candles during memorial service at the Lincoln Memorial ending a 30-day period of official national mourning for the late John F. Kennedy. Thousands of other persons also held flickering candles at the service and heard the Chief Executive give a moving eulogy to the assassinated President Kennedy. Paraphrasing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Mr. Johnson said: “For let us here on this Christmas night determine that John Kennedy did not live or die in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, good will toward all men.” President Johnson called on all Americans to use Christmas as a time of thanks-giving, hope and dedication. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30562 POPE'S BROTHER, FRIEND AT MEMORIAL JERUSALEM -- The elder brother of Pope Paul VI lights candles in memory of 6 million Jews slain by the Nazi regime, Sen. Lodovico Montini is shown at the "Chamber of Destruction" on Mount Zion, Jerusalem, during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Watching at right is Dr. Meir Mendes, deputy director of the Israel Department of Christian Communities in the Ministry of Religions. The Montini-Mendes families have been close since 1939 when Pope Paul (then Msgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, Pro-Secretary of State) succeeded in saving the distinguished Roman Jewish family from Fascist antisemitic persecution. Through his efforts, the family found safety in Palestine. Dr. Mendes' father, Guido, now 87, was a schoolmate of Eugenio Pacelli, who went on to become Pope Pius XII. Dr. Mendes was a member of the Israeli delegation which attended Pope Paul's coronation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-2A-64-W)

- In memoriam: red vestments for martyrs.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-29923 IN MEMORIAM: RED VESTMENTS FOR MARTYRS SAN FRANCISCO -- Typical of hundreds of churches across the United States was this scene in San Francisco. On Sunday, Sept. 22, the nation’s churchgoers joined in memorial services for four Negro girls who died when a bomb blasted a Negro Baptist church in Birmingham. Here, at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic church, the more than 2,500 attending services overflowed the building. They fell to their knees on the sidewalk during a Mass offered for the dead children. The priest wore vestments in the “red of martyrdom” instead of the black of mourning. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-9D-63-W)
